Murphy !!??

Tue Jan 01, 2019 10:18 pm

Was I watching a different game to others who actually rated Murphy today ?

He played right in front of me and his tracking was non existent. Throughout the first half Cunningham was having to cope with two players running at him with no back up.

I was surprised it took Warnock until half time to sub him. Listened to Neil’s interview on the radio in the car and he was not at all happy with players not carrying out instructions and didn’t hold back !! As Murphy was hauled off I think it’s a fair bet he was one that Warnock wasn’t happy with.

Selection for Huddersfield will be interesting !!

He doesn’t track back to defend anywhere near as much as Hoilett does, and that’s something you have to do against the top teams.

Wasn’t surprised he got taken off.

Hoilett looked interested when he came on. He may be slower but he was 100% better.

Murphy was at fault for the second goal by not cutting out the pass down the right, but he did make the effort to get back and he did attempt to cut out the pass, he just didn't quite get there.

I'm going to defend Murphy here, as I don't think he's a lazy player at all. You try continually running at players and beating players and also have the energy to be able to sprint back and defend as soon as we lose the ball.

Murphy is our biggest attacking danger and we heavily rely on him, Murphy puts everything into trying to create something for us. The problem isn't Murphy, the problem is the rest of the team, as we can't keep hold of the ball well enough.

Murphy runs down the wing for the umpteenth time, we fail to score, then we lose possession and Murphy is expected to sprint the length of the pitch back to cover the struggling, out of position Cunningham. If we kept possession better and managed certain situations better, Murphy would be able to get back into position after one of his lung bursting runs.

The alternative solution would be to instruct Murphy to not run at players so often and conserve his energy more, but that would make him much less of a threat.

I would agree with you if he was running flat out at full backs and creating but yesterday it was all half paced and no end product.

First half of the season I couldn’t understand why Warnock wasn’t playing him in every game, now I can see why.

Glad someone said it. Cunningham has been slated on Twitter but you try playing against 2 top class Spurs' players trying to defend and go forward. Murphy totally at fault.

It seems like Murphy got subbed for crossing the half way line and attacking.
It was clear that instructions were to all was to stay in your own half, defend but do not tackle ! !

Odd tactics but there we go.
