About Gillingham

Gillingham Football Club is a professional association football club based in the town of Gillingham, Kent, England. The only Kent-based club in the Football League, the "Gills" play their home matches at the Priestfield Stadium. The team competes in League One, the third tier of the English football league system.

The club was founded in 1893 and joined the Football League in 1920. They were voted out of the league in favour of Ipswich Town at the end of the 1937–38 season, but returned to it 12 years later after it was expanded from 88 to 92 clubs. Twice in the late 1980s they came close to winning promotion to the second tier of English football, but a decline then set in and in 1993 they narrowly avoided relegation to the Football Conference. Between 2000 and 2005, Gillingham were in the second tier of the English football league system for the only time in their history, achieving a club record highest league finish of eleventh place in 2002–03.

Previous Meeting

Our last fixture against Gillingham was a Championship fixture at Priestfield in April 2005, we drew 1-1. Matt Jarvis opened the scoring for Gillingham before Paul Parry equalised for the Bluebirds.

Except to see heavy rotation for this game, front 3 of NML, Harris and Reid. Prob Smithies in goal, not sure about the middle I guess he would like to rest Gunners and Arter

Currently, tickets are only available to certain members via the ticket office or to members through accredited supporters clubs

That is likely to remain the case, although it is usual that Vince Alm will have any 'spares' with him on the day, if they are not sold out (there were plenty available on the site today)

Gone for a home win, if we play a scratch side resting first team players we will lose as they will not have any match time playing together.
Shame as i can remember how special round 3 of FA Cup was when we were in lower leagues it was the game of the season, hoping to draw a top team at home. :bluebird:

It's a good chance for some decent players like NML who I like as an asset he's a big boy give him games in matches like this and he could have an impact at the back end of the year with a crucial goal for us.

Reid will play. So should a youth kid or two even if from bench. Pelts, Kadeem, Smithies, Ward even our boy Zohore should get some good minutes. Hope we win and get a soft 4th round tie.

MONTHEBLUES
PS - well done Warnock because Camarasa is a gem

What is the latest team news

The Gills are missing a host of players for today's FA Cup encounter.

Billy Bingham, Barry Fuller, Dean Parrett and Max Ehmer are all absent.

But manager Steve Lovell has revealed that Regan Charles-Cook will feature in the squad.

As far as the Bluebirds are concerned, the young trio of Cameron Coxe, James Waite and Lloyd Humphries will all be included in the squad.

A number of first regulars, including Bruno Manga, Joe Ralls and captain Sean Morrison will feature, although Alex Smithies is set to replace first choice goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

However, first team duo Victor Camarasa and Harry Arter will not be risked after picking up knocks in the defeat to Tottenham on New Year's Day, with Rhys Healey (cup-tied) and Matt Connolly (illness) also unavailable.

What have the managers said?

Steve Lovell

"All we can do is give our best. Whatever happens, we have to give everything if we are going to have a chance," said Lovell.

"It's about enjoying the occasion. It will be a big game.

"It will be a good atmosphere. Cardiff will bring a few and they are well supported."

Neil Warnock

“There’ll be changes to the team, that’s for sure, but I want to progress in the competition and we’ll be taking a strong squad to Kent," said Warnock.

“Three of our younger lads will be coming with us as well: Cameron Coxe, James Waite and Lloyd Humphries.

“We don’t want to be a headline this weekend, that’s for sure. From Gillingham’s perspective they’ll see it as a great opportunity of course.”

This will be the first FA Cup meeting between Gillingham and Cardiff since the 1996-97 season – Gillingham progressing following a 2-0 victory in round two.

Gillingham will face Cardiff for the first time in any competition since April 2005 – a 1-1 draw in the Championship.

Cardiff are unbeaten in their last two trips to the Priestfield Stadium, winning 2-1 in April 2004 and drawing their most recent visit 1-1 in April 2005.

Gillingham have won just one of their last nine FA Cup games against Premier League sides (D1 L7), a 3-2 victory in the 2003-04 season against Charlton.

Gillingham boss out for an upset

"Today’s game presents us with a fantastic challenge; it’s great to be welcoming a Premier League side to the Priestfield and we are all very much looking forward to it. We can play our natural game, take the game to Cardiff and if everybody plays to their maximum then I see no reason why we cannot cause a massive upset. After all, that’s the magic of the FA Cup.
However we need to be wary of the threat Cardiff pose. They are not a Premier League side for no reason and regardless of what team they put out, they have the strength in depth to cause anybody a problem."

What kind of Cardiff City team?

With today’s teamsheets revealed at 2pm, we’re about to find out how strong a side Neil Warnock will field for this FA Cup tie.

The Cardiff boss insisted it would be a “strong” team when he spoke to the media in the build-up to this game, with Sean Morrison, Bruno Manga, Joe Bennett and Bobby Reid all expected to start.

Big chances

So the likes of Alex Smithies, Kadeem Harris and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing get opportunities to stake their claim for regular Cardiff City minutes. So too Bobby Reid and Lee Peltier, who have been in and out of the side.

Victor Camarasa, Aron Gunnarsson, Sol Bamba and Neil Etheridge are the main stars to get a rest, with Josh Murphy and Junior Hoilett strong options on the bench, alongside Under-23 starlets Lloyd Humphries and Cameron Coxe.

The Bluebirds *should* have enough to claim the win today.

With that line up, I'm expecting a minimum of a 2 goal win. I've predicted 3-0 to City on my Super 6. I just don't see Gillingham having the quality to trouble us with that line up. I expect a comfortable win.

Missed watching the first few minutes (but heard on radio) and Cardiff settling into the game nicely after 20 minutes but without really testing the Gills keeper...

Signs are good though and Mendez-Laing (after early treatment for a clash of heads) is full of running :ayatollah:

Free kick to City a yard outside the penalty area for a silly challenge on Mendez-Laing by Gill's Alex Lacey...

Ball put in from left by Bobby Reid but cleared easily by Gills defence :(

City on top but not tested their keeper much. Bennett has a decent chance and goalie saved. NM L looks the most dangerous and Damour very neat and tidy in possession.
