My mate Dave does the lights for London's new year. He is responsible for the Eye and the buildings that light up, and the minute countdown thing.

Done it for the last few years - sat on a barge or on a roof with a laptop and a big box of electronic gadgetry.

Its amazing given the amount of homeless on our streets (especially london) The NHS crying out for money and the police force desperatly short of officers that we allow the councils to spend an estimated £10million a year on NYE fireworks, £3.5mill on londons event alone.

I like NYE but the firework displays are a huge waste of money

They reckon 120,000 watched the London fireworks. Food, Drink, transport, restaurants, bars, hotels, brings increased earnings, wages, and taxes for the Govt. Also ticket sales were £1m.

All ticket sales go towards funding the fireworks. Khan has said he put aside £2.3mill for the display alone. How much did it cost to police the event ?

Its a joke the way this country wastes money then moans we have none to help our own people who need it.

Ticket sale money alone should be enough for the display no need to spend millions more to try and better other countrys

It was originally a one off event to see in the millennium that’s carried on since, don’t hype it up as a one off event if you plan to. Sorry it on for the next 20 years

Wastes money? :?

Not on this occasion (look properly at how funded) and I think 120k people watching on the ground and millions more on TV would beg to differ ;)

Much more money is 'wasted' elsewhere and on dafter things (a whole new and lengthy thread) and giving the people a celebratory display on New Year's eve might just have given millions the 'feel good' factor...just like the Madness concert on TV either side of it! :D

Millions may have watched it and may well differ , but millions who didnt would agree!

Much better ways to entertain the public than pretty much literally burning money.
Never liked Fireworks find them pointless

Why people feel the need to blow millions of pounds to watch a number change on a calender baffles me

Like you said the concert was great
And it cost a fraction of the cost of the display

Tax payer money going from Wales to the richest city in the world to fund a firework display in the English capital.

I’ve been lucky enough to go to the Scottish/ Swedish ones over th last few years. But why be a modern, confident country that is visited by tourists from all over the world when the English can do it for us.

We are a pathetic bunch.
