MERSON'S PREDICTION: BLUEBIRDS v SPURS

Mon Dec 31, 2018 8:25 pm

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has predicted that Tottenham will thrash Cardiff in their Premier League clash on New Year’s Day.

Spurs head into Tuesday’s match on the back of a first defeat in six after Wolves came from behind to beat them 3-1 at Wembley on Saturday, and they will be looking for a swift response against a Bluebirds side they have already beaten this season.

Merson has predicted that they will do just that with a 4-1 drubbing at the Cardiff City Stadium, comparing Tottenham to the Harlem Globetrotters after their recent big wins over Everton and Bournemouth.

In his predictions for Sky Sports, Merson said: “The pressure’s off Tottenham now, and they’ll be like the Harlem Globetrotters. I can’t see anything but an away win. You can go to Liverpool and get beat, or other places, but not at home by Wolves.

“They ripped Everton up, they smashed Bournemouth at home. But then the pressure was on, now it’s off – they could be kicking themselves if Liverpool get beaten on Thursday, they could have been three points behind.

“Cardiff have been unbelievable. To do what they did after getting rinsed by Manchester United, to come back with two clean sheets and a 1-0 at Leicester, you’ve got to credit the manager, he’s so underrated. It’s phenomenal.”

OPINION

It would not be a huge surprise to see Spurs click into gear once again and dispatch Cardiff with ease on Tuesday, as predicted here by Merson. Saturday’s game against Wolves looked a step too far after a gruelling run of games for Spurs, with several players looking out on their feet towards the end as the visitors came on strong. Merson claims that the pressure is off Spurs now but that is not really the case, with every game so important for their top-four hopes. Obviously there was talk of a title race when they went above Manchester City, but in all honesty that was never going to happen even if they did beat Wolves. With everything that has been going on this season it is remarkable that Spurs find themselves in this position, and they must be happy with their season so far on the whole. Tuesday is however a good chance to bounce back, and hopefully they come out firing once again to remind everyone of the talent within this squad.
