Efe Ambrose heading for Hibs exit as defender prepares to 'activate release clause'

Former Celtic defender has been a mainstay in Neil Lennon's defence but could well have played his last game for the club.


Efe Ambrose is set to leave Hibs for free in January.

The Nigerian defender is poised to activate a clause in his contract that allows him to walk away from Easter Road for nothing in the New Year, according to the Mail.


Former Celtic defender Ambrose has been a mainstay in Neil Lennon's backline and has been in talks with the club about extending his contract beyond it's expiry this summer.

But it appears the 30-year-old sees his future elsewhere and is set to deliver a major blow to Lennon.


Cardiff City are reportedly interested and Ambrose could follow John McGinn and Dylan McGeouch in rejecting new terms in Leith to move south of the border.

Ambrose joined Hibs from Celtic initially on loan in January 2017 and made the deal permanent that summer after signing a two-year contract.

After helping the club win promotion to the top flight he has been one of Lennon's top performers in the Premiership.

The 51-times capped Nigeria international made 45 appearances for Hibs last season and has followed that up with 24 in the first half of this season.

But it now appears he has played his last game for the club, leaving a major headache for Lennon who already admits he needs to bolster his squad in January.

Plays with composure, reminds me of Gabbidon on the ball, appears to be very casual. In fact at times is too casual and can give the ball away but positives outweight the negatives.

Pleased if he comes here. Only as cover mind, he's not better than big Sol or Captain Moz.

Doesn't concern me, Warnock often said the same about Bamba but he drilled it into him to just clear it, all our defenders pretty much know that im sure he would be no different.

2 defenders and a defensive midfielder have berm linked to City. I feel we need a centre forward more than these positions.

Personally, I think the midfield is key as we are very thin on the ground there and need to stop the better teams playing straight through us.

Seen dollar opposite opinions seen some he is horrendous but some saying he's been MOTM numerous times and been outstanding, his work ethic seems to fit the bill.

Problem is if we're bringing players in they've got to be as good if not better than what we've already got especially not a 30 year old as cover as we already have Manga and Connolly who can do that job. If we were looking for cover at CB id rather have Scott McKenna who as least has some potential. for the future. But in all honesty id rather we just go and get Clyne from Liverpool and that's our defence sorted for the window.

very average centre back for celtic from what i remember. we don't need an another average centre back - we need a proper right back to take the pressure off manga.

He's on a free transfer and wages will be low so IMO worth a punt to flesh out the squad.

Were looking at the Finnish lad who plays for Dundee too. Seems to be highly rated up here but is untested at our level. Again would be inexpensive and would pad the squad out.

Perhaps we are signing cheap squad players and putting all our money towards a striker?

Ive watched him loads of times that's what I'm basing it on is that ok or does that not qualify?
