Report: Cardiff confident of signing Liverpool’s Nathaniel Clyne
By Subhankar Mondal

According to The Mirror, Cardiff City are confident of signing Nathaniel Clyne on loan from Liverpool in the January transfer window.

It has been reported that Fulham and Leicester City are also interested in securing the services of the 27-year-old right-back.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock is confident of bringing the former Crystal Palace and Southampton defender to the Cardiff City Stadium next month on loan, according to the report.

The Mirror has claimed that Warnock thinks his previous work with Clyne at Palace will give him the edge over Fulham and Leicester.

Leaving Liverpool

Clyne has struggled to play regularly for Liverpool in recent years and is not as important to the Merseyside outfit as he was when he joined the Reds from Southampton in the summer of 2015 for a transfer fee reported by The Mirror to be worth £12.5 million.

Leaving Liverpool in January to play regularly does make sense for Clyne, but the right-back will also be leaving a club who could win the Premier League and the Champions League this season.

I would be amazed, and over the moon !, if this came off.

Not only would it be a statement of intent (must be £40K+ wages ?) but also allow Warnock to play Manga at centre back where he has stated he has wanted to play him all season.

All that said, I would be really surprised if Liverpool let him out on loan with them chasing the title unless they're signing another full back.

I can't see Warnock dropping Bamba or his captain, Morrison, to accommodate Manga in the centre. If Clyne were to join us, I can honestly see him having to sit on the bench, because I don't see Manga being dropped either.

Clyne will be straight in at RB imho.

Agreed, that will probably be part of any deal.

Manga will be first choice centre back and then it is out of Morrison or Bamba as to who plays alongside him. That gives us real strength over the last half of the season

Well, you'd think that Liverpool would insist there's some kind of clause that he has to play (ala Grugic). In that case Warnock might go 5 at the back, using Clyne as a wingback.

I think he would play three centre backs with wingbacks

Probably using a 343 formation

I cannot understand why anyone would think Sir Neil might,

1. Continue to play Manga out of position as a right back , which he's frankly not much good at, and keep an England international right back on the bench.

2. Drop Sol Bamba, who despite a few mistakes earlier this term has been brilliant and included in the premiership team of the week.

3. Suddenly change the entire shape and style of the team on a whim at this crucial stage.

Or most of all......

4. Bother to work for this deal with Clyne if it wasn't clear exactly what he needs him to do, which is exactly what Manga does, except properly - like Bennet does on the other side .

What happens to Manga is secondary, and not urgent. We must certainly keep him, be grateful for how well he's covered that un natural position , and find him the first possible opportunity to fit in somewhere else in the first team where he's more comfortable and can receive the proper recognition of his obvious talent and ability.

If we sign Clyne I defo see us going with a 3-4-3 especially for away games. It would be an amazing signing if we did manage to pull it off. It does seem possible as Trent Alexander Arnold is first choice then its Joe Gomez then Fabinho so after a long period out with injury he does need regular first team football which is what he'd definitely get here.
