Real Football Clubs

Fri Dec 28, 2018 1:17 am

In another thread concerning Sunderland, we discussed what makes a proper club.
I somewhat jokingly suggested that I'd like to reconvene the league according to the overall credentials of clubs.

Here's my list of clubs who should be in the Premiership .
Who have I left out, and what'd your list be ?

I've left out Cardiff City because if I'm honest I think in this company and on tradition we'd maybe get promoted for two or three seasons every decade or so. However, since I'd stop promotion and relegation in order to get rid of the riff raff , this might not happen.

Tottenham
Arsenal
Liverpool
Manchester United
Blackburn Rovers
Blackpool
Preston North End
Newcastle United
Sunderland
Burnley
Leeds Utd
Everton
Derby County
Portsmouth
Sheffield Wednesday
Bolton Wanderers
Ipswich
Stoke City
Cardiff City ( I know what I said, but I can't go through with leaving them out )

Can't have Derby on the list. They don't play in the snow.

Re: Real Football Clubs

The teams that should be are in the Top level are the teams that earn that position, having a big fan base doesnt give you the right to play at the top level

Re: Real Football Clubs

Fri Dec 28, 2018 10:39 am

Same applies to history, just because you were good a few decades ago doesnt mean you have the right to play at the top level now

Well, Forrest I agree might be in there, but their stunning successes were crammed into a short period. Chelsea are no one - just a second rate club who had a big cash injection and bought success - no tradition of proper support or history

Re: Real Football Clubs

Actually I'd put Chelsea below us for solid long lived substance

Re: Real Football Clubs

There are a few there who would not be on my list. Blackpool may have been a big club once, but not during my lifetime. Same goes for Blackburn. I know they won the PL once, but that was very much a one off like Leicester. I have always put the likes of Leicester, Blackburn, Coverntry, Sheff Utd and others as similar to us in size and stature. During my time of watching the game, Burnley have been nothing special. I watched them play in div 1 briefly in the days of Ralph Coates, and of course more recently. Always thought of them as a smaller club than us to be honest. Preston are another who were big back in the day, but I don't believe they would deserve it any more than us. If we are going back in time, we were once a very big club, winning the FA Cup when it meant something, as well as being serious contenders to win the title. I expect everyone will name different clubs, probably depends which era you have been brought up in.

apart from a 3/4 year period in the early eighties when the club were getting constant bad press they have been really well supported....a seasons average crowd of over 30k on 64 occasions that spans 110 years suggests your wrong.

Chelsea have always been well supported spend that majority of time in the top league. They've also had sustained success over the last 20+ yrs probably longer than a lot of clubs on that list.

Always been a big club for as far back as I go. I think you could just about make an argument for West Ham as well.

I went on the train all the way to Blackpool on my own when I was a kid to watch Sir Stanley Matthews play.
When I got there I didn’t have enough money to get in and a man on a suit came out to find me sitting on the steps outside looking sad, (well crying a bit actually)
He questioned me and when he got the story he took me into the directors box and I saw the best footballer in the world score two goals whilst eating all sorts of fantastic food and drinking Coca Cola which I hadn’t tried before.
I honestly don’t know who the man was but he must have been a director and he sent someone with me to the station to make sure I got on the train with a bag of sandwiches for the journey.

After that no one is ever going to tell me Blackpool aren’t a great club

Yeah, that wouldn't happen today on several levels would it ?

Personally, I will always dislike Blackpool after the Play Off Final in 2010 haha.

Seriously though, apart from that one season they have been a small Club bouncing around the lower divisions since the mid 70s, not sure they deserve a place on the list.

You can't have Derby over Forest either surely?

Good thread though.
