Jay Bothroyd stirs Cardiff City-Swansea City rivalry with goading tweet about Swans' 'possession football'

The striker is clearly still a Bluebird deep down judging by his tweet about Boxing Day results

Former Cardiff City striker Jay Bothroyd has taken to social media to aim a cheeky dig at Swansea City and their 'possession football.'

The one-time England international gave his thoughts on the Boxing Day action on his Twitter page, assessing the performances of former clubs Arsenal and Cardiff before sarcastically addressing Swansea's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

Arsenal drew away at Brighton, while Neil Warnock's Bluebirds earned what could turn out to be a priceless point at Crystal Palace.

Cardiff had just 41 per cent possession at Selhurst Park and have frequently had to make do with less of the ball than their opponents on Warnock's watch.

But Bothroyd chided: "Arsenal was (sic) poor today but got a draw so I guess that’s a point in the right direction. My boys Cardiff City got another point so that’s good and Swansea lost again but played great football with 59% possession."

He used three crying with laughter emojis to emphasise his point.

The Swans, of course, have made their name as a possession, passing side in recent times.

Bothroyd's comments earned him plaudits from Cardiff fans, who used phrases such as 'Once a blue always a blue' and 'Love you Jay.'

It also provoked an angry response from Swans supporters who pointed to Bothroyd's so-called failures at various clubs and responses such as 'Shut up and watch Cardiff get relegated.'

Bothroyd currently plies his trade for Japanese side Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, having scored 41 goals for the Bluebirds between 2008 and 2011 and cementing his place as a firm fans' favourite under Dave Jones' watch.

This is by no means the first time he's risked the ire of Cardiff's rivals out west.

In 2009, Bothroyd enraged Swans fans by comments made ahead of a South Wales derby by suggesting they were weaker under boss Paulo Sousa.

"They've lost Jason Scotland and Jordi Gomez and lost the manager [Roberto Martinez], which is a massive factor and he is doing well at Wigan," he said at the time.

"I don't think they are the same side. Where are they in the league? And where are we in the league?"

Swansea would go on to have the final say by winning that game, but it seems Bothroyd hasn't changed his stance after these many years.

The Swans once tried to buy Bothroyd from Cardiff in 2010, prompting an angry response from the player himself who said at the time: "You can forget that story. I won’t be going there. It’s embarrassing. I’m happy at Cardiff.”

I remember when the Jacks tried to sign him.

Fair play to him, he often still tweets about City.

If only he was fit for the whole play-off final.

The same Jay Bothroyd that went to QPR on on free because he wouldn’t resign for us after winning an England cap?

A guy who had ability in every department for a striker.. finishing, power, bit of pace for his size.. a shame he never fulfilled his ambition here.

That’s him, and who can blame him wanting to make some cash in a great career move. We have to remember that players are no different to anyone else in wanting to get the best for themselves. Loyalty only goes so far.
