Its a big city and they have always had a big following are not going to switch to boro newcastle leeds etc so no choice really and in the division there in at the moment they are going to see more wins than losses .

It's not that big, it's about the same size as Swansea, which makes their support even better.

Sunderland:
Population of Sunderland is less than 180,000, with surrounding areas 280,000 population.
Cardiff 350,000, with surrounding areas nearly 600,000.
Sunderland with No great history of winning anything, have absolutely amazing support.
I have been there when they brought 10,000 fans to Ninian Park, only them and Sheff Wed have ever done that
I also watched them play away at Tranmere and Sunderland took 12,000 fans.
I was at Roker Park about 1978 Sunderland 1 Cardiff 2 26,000 including 150 Cardiff fans

Only
two days later, on Monday 7th May, the newly crowned FA Cup holders Sunderland had to come to Cardiff for a night game and we drew 1-1 in an entertaining game that saw some great saves from Sunderland legend Jim Montgomery to thwart the City attack time and again
City legend Bobby Woodruff scored the City goal on that day

It is great support by the black cats and they are a big(ish) Club.
Have to add a slight caveat and say they are as fickle as anyone else though, they dropped almost 13.5k on their gates after relegation, and were getting upto 20,000 less than the previous season in some games.
You compare that with Villa who's crowds (on average) have barely dipped.
Still impressive but I don't think they are a 'loyal' as some think.
As an aside, that Netflix series really was a good watch. Couldn't recommend it enough to any football fan.

dont really see the comparison is fair tbh..Sunderland struggled from the start and went down bottom and failure loses fans no matter who you are..their 27k ave last season has only been bettered once in a season that saw relegation to tier 3 by Man City..
as for the 46k ,what a fantastic turn out
