No, they're not.

Attendances alone do not a "massive club" make. Would anyone argue that West Ham are the 3rd biggest club in England this season?

The size of a club is a complex mixture of trophies, history, fan base and also ambition!

The biggest single factor in a 'big club' is the fan base, especially when not playing in the top division. To pick a few at random, Sunderland, Newcastle, Leeds, Villa, are big clubs.

As you said annis massive club.

Also, a shout out to Wrexham who smashed Salford 5-1 with a crowd of over 8k.

And those clubs are situated in bigger cities hence the larger fan bases.

Personally I think getting an attendance of 43k in League 1 despite not wining a trophy since the 1970's is more of a reason to call them a massive club.

But to be fair to all those 4 clubs Tony, non of them have won much major for many many years.

They keep good support even during years of say relegation or lower division football home and away :thumbright: :thumbright:

You are right Annis  I was trying to make a point (badly as it happens) that clubs in bigger cities must be bigger clubs because they have a natural fan base. I have always marvelled at how Leeds, Newcastle, Sunderland and even not so long ago Manchester City kept their supporter levels whilst playing in the lower leagues.

"Massive, massive club"...with just one major trophy in the last 80 (eighty) years!

Same as Newcastle, decent sized club that just get large crowds!

If that was true then Bristol Rovers would be a much bigger club than us and Millwall would be bigger than Manchester City or Liverpool.

I noticed Sunderlands crowd and thought it reflected fantastic supporters, but although they're having problems right now I don't see how anyone can say they're not a huge club.

Some clubs are the real deal, wherever they are currently playing and it breaks my heart to see clubs like Portsmouth in such trouble. Personally I'd reconvene the league according to the overall footballing credentials of the clubs

There of course a big club but really they just have a big fan base. The things there most famous for in the last couple of years is back to back relegations an having a nonce in there first team squad.

Massive massive clubs do not have to ask for there fans to come and replace there cheap faded seats for them.

Population of Sunderland is less than c.180,000 (or c.280,000 for the whole borough)

The city of Cardiff haas figures of 330,000 with its surrounding areas of RCT (c.238,000) Bridgend (c.141,000) and Caerphilly (c.179,000) adding c.558,000 potential fans to its databases to take the population (particularly considering the lack of any real opposition the region) to a healthy 880,000 before we even mention migrating Jacks or Robins! :laughing6:

Sunderland is the 16th largest city in England and Wales, whilst Cardiff is No.8 so maybe we should be in the 'big' club category by population that some talk about? :?

I travel to Sunderland for an event every year and its not the best place to go. People are friendly enough but its a relatively small, uninspiring place well in the shadow of its close neighbour, Newcastle. Being honest, Sunderland FC get a lot of its support from 'tradition' and a lack of 'other' things to do in the area!

In reality, declaring a club to be 'big' is a toughie and one that will rely get no consensus :ayatollah:

This is always overlooked but very important.

Cardiff as a city punches well above it's weight on the "things to do list" mainly due to our capital city status. It also has professional sports clubs in Football, Cricket, Rugby and Ice Hockey.

Sunderland people support their football team on mass with few other sports to support. It's working class and dock history is ingrained in Football support.

Sunderland AFC are the only professional sports teams in the city.

Sunderland:

Population of Sunderland is less than 180,000, with surrounding areas 280,000 population.

Cardiff 350,000, with surrounding areas nearly 600,000.

Sunderland with No great history of winning anything, have absolutely amazing support.

I have been there when they brought 10,000 fans to Ninian Park, only them and Sheff Wed have ever done that :thumbright:

I also watched them play away at Tranmere and Sunderland took 12,000 fans.

I was at Roker Park about 1978 Sunderland 1 Cardiff 2 26,000 including 150 Cardiff fans :bluebird: :bluebird:

Everyone acknowledges their support is hugely impressive, just doesn't necessarily make them a massive club...

or buy them trophies.?
had the Chelsea or Man Citys owners decided to go to the north east instead you and Baz would be now saying the same about Chelsea and Man City.
i think size of club is crowd based , ambition changes and trophies can be funded for limited periods .

Would Sunderland still have big support if they had our history? Them 86 top flight seasons us first season in top flight since 1962.(please note I only comment on Cardiff city AFC the bluebirds not Cardiff red.).

You say excuses, but they are reasons.

All things being equal their population would not sustain those crowds.

There are therefore REASONS for the percentage that choose to attend their games.

Having about a quarter of your population attending a single event does not suggest a well developed entertainment catalogue for the city.

Still an amazing feat for football albeit where football is all you may have.

Sunderland have not got a massive population compared to many other Cities?

They've even had 75,000 for a home game.

OK, how many clubs today would get a crowd of over 46,000 in Div3? and rem it was against bottom of the League Bradford City, not a local derby and not a must win game.

For me Sunderlands crowds deserve nothing but praise, they have been taking thousands upon thousands away as usual.

My point is, instead of some applauding their support, some try and bring it dow, we were going up last season to the Prem and many of our home crowds were barely 16,000.

Don't presume to have any insight as to what one's opinions may be as regards other clubs or speculative alternative scenarios. Personally I wouldn't consider Chelsea or Manchester City to be massive clubs...
