Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock delivers key Emiliano Sala update

Monday 24th December 2018

By Ian Mitchelmore

Neil Warnock admits it's currently "unlikely" that Cardiff City will strike a permanent deal to sign Nantes forward Emiliano Sala in the January transfer window.

The Bluebirds have been heavily linked with a swoop for the 28-year-old - who has netted 13 goals in 18 appearances in France so far this term - who could potentially help to solve Cardiff's blunt attack.

Warnock was in France earlier this month to watch Nantes as they beat Marseille, with Argentine Sala finding the back of the net in a 3-2 win for his side.

But speaking ahead of Cardiff's Boxing Day clash with his former employers Crystal Palace, Warnock admitted that - while a potential deal for Sala was not completely out of the reckoning - it appears increasingly likely that the Bluebirds' winter business will be conducted in the loan market.

When asked if the Bluebirds were any closer to striking a deal to secure the services of the forward, Warnock commented: "No not at all.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"We’re looking as best we can at where we can get players in.

"At the moment it looks very much like the loan market for us.

"That might change, and everything seems to change so dramatically at our club at times. I wouldn’t say that but it’s highly unlikely at the moment.

"Hopefully we can bring in one or two over the next couple of weeks to give us a little bit more choice with selection.

"We're not doing so good at the moment. Without going into names, we've got three or four niggles that we could have done without really at this stage."

Warnock has previously stated his desire to sign a right-back and a central midfielder in addition to a frontman during the January window in a bid to bolster the Bluebirds' hopes of preserving their Premier League status.

And the veteran boss has revealed that he is "close" to a couple of targets, although the Yorkshireman admits he's frustrated by the Premier League's loan rules which state clubs in the top flight can only have two players on loan from other sides in the same division at any given time.

"I’d like to think I’ve got one close but you just never know in the game," he added.

"There’s a couple of positions we're looking at, I'm close to a couple of them, but we're nowhere near there, so it’s like not knowing what’s around the corner when opening a present.

"It is so difficult the higher you go. The Championship was a little bit easier in January but in the Premier League you’ve got to get the best in.

"Heaven knows why we can only have two loan players from English clubs, I haven't got a clue, when you’re talking about our English players needing experience.

"And we can't loan more than one player because we've got Harry Arter so I can't take a young English striker or a young midfielder. It’s scandalous. You can bring 10 from abroad.

"Who are we trying to help? Who has invented these rules? It's a disgrace really, when I could be giving another good young English lad the opportunity of playing in the Premier League."

If we dont spend and try and rely on loans and bargain signings in january and we end up getting relegated i will be very disappointed in the ambition of our owner.

Warnock has never liked buying in January so I'm not sure what the cafuffle is all about.
We needed a RB in the summer and we also needed a striker.
This is the club's problem and not the rules !!

I don't think it was ever in doubt that our budget was not going to stretch very far for the Jan transfer window. I think Warnock has a point about loans, seems a bit odd that we can borrow overseas players but not home grown ones. I would have thought it would benefit British football in general if more local players could get an opportunity to test themselves against the best in the PL.
As far as our signings go, listening to comments from the club recently, it sounded like they were preparing those who were forecasting big money to be spent to expect to be disappointed. I think to be fair, most fans realise that our funds are going to be very limited.

This isn't about warnock dislikes the january window it's about we MUST spend in this window, if we don't we will go down...no question. I agree with what you say about the f*ck up in the summer, and what about the so called £10 million burning a hole in warnocks pocket that he didn't spend???

Loans between Premier Leage clubs and other English counterparts are officially called temporary transfers.

Under the rules in the Premier League Handbook 2017/18 (Download PDF, size: 46.1MB), there are restrictions on how many players Premier League clubs can loan from other Premier League/English clubs.

They are:
- Premier League clubs may not register more than two players on loan at any one time.
- The maximum number of loans registrable in the same season is four, and, under no circumstances, shall more than one be from the same club at any one time.
- Premier League clubs cannot loan to another Premier League club a player they have acquired in the same transfer window.
- A Premier League club may loan not more than one of its goalkeepers to another Premier League club

With the exception of Welsh clubs competing in the competitions listed under Rule V.6.2, loans from a club in membership of another National Association do not count towards the above quotas.

In all honesty this is what most expected om january. £20million strikers is a pipedream this year.

In all fairness if Camarasa is anything to go by then foreign imports on loan with a view to buy if we stay up is probably the most sensible way to go

Understand that Sir Neil will be using press statements to price condition and corner the club hes negotiating with for the player, so don't take these statements too seriously.

Turkish press reporting as a fait accomplis that Galatasaray have accepted a bid of €9 Million form Cardiff City for their defender Kabak.
Everton have announced that they have agreed for Niasse to go out on loan in January according to the BBC News feed, although they haven't specified to whom .

Hope that's true about Kabak. As far as you can tell on YouTube he seems to be a real old fashioned and very effective specialist right back even though he's young

Which is what I've been saying. English players are over priced and can be a big gamble, foreign players are much cheaper and can be a biggish gamble. So much talent in Europe.

So what's the deal with Kotrijk (spelling) the Belgian team tan bought? Can we sign players off them?

For f sake neil keeps banging on about looks like we will be in the loan market only when the owner has offered funds to be available crack on.

You're right about the striker being a pipedream.

Unfortunately the idea that the club would pay a fee to buy Camarasa is also a pipedream.

Even if we stay up who's to say that any money will be available to buy players? The club's position is now becoming much clearer - there will be virtually no money available to strengthen the squad in January and if we stay up the budget next season will probably be much the same.

9 million euros for a young centre back dosent look realistic to me, surely we would spend that on a striker and put it towards the sala deal maybe? Didnt turkish press report we was bidding for tolgay arslan too but all that seemed like bullshit?

Warnock seems very opinionated when it comes to rules and regulations, but surprisingly quiet when it comes to owners squabbling over a few mill when his boss is the stingiest in the league. It's surprising such an opinionated man can be so quiet. Especially this time of year with the mulled wine being offered in every household in S.Wales and Cornwall

Could be playing mind games here, or means it. Cardiff cant afford to mess with him.
