What on Earth was that: WHU 3 - CCFC 1

Tue Dec 04, 2018 9:47 pm

Having watched every game this season, I can honestly say that was THE WORSE 2nd half performance of any game. I couldn't wait for the game to end. With the game already lost NW made 3 substitutions. Thankfully off came Rolls (whose penalty miss was so costly) for Murphy. Then Hoillett was pulled for NML and finally Patterson came off for Harris.

Murphy looked sharp (as usual) but NML looked like he hadn't a clue whilst Harris really did little. But the questions I must ask is why hoof the ball forward in the air with no recognised target man and what must Gary Madine do to actually get on the pitch. He was bought as a striker yet the only chance he looks to have of playing is if both keepers get injured and he is all that is left.

We have played well against some of the top teams in the division (Man City excepted) but to lose so badly against WHU has to be a disaster.

What else could he do but make subs? Wasn't needed 1st half and only took opening 15mins to score 3 goals 2nd half, only time subs were needed would have been to change things around unfortunately 3 goals meant needed them sooner rather than later.

Not a disaster at all. Unfortunate that we missed an opportunity to move up but it hasn't really harmed our position. West Ham are a better team than their early results have suggested ,( as we are), and they'll beat a lot of teams. Once again we had bad luck in some ways and particularly in the first goal - people have critised Morrison for not clearing but I don't know what he could have done the way the ball fell on him in fairness .
I thought 3-1 fiattered them really and despite the scoreline I don't think we looked outclassed . We know there are certain teams in this league we probably can't beat, and West Ham are on the borderline of those we can and can't compete with YET.
On that performance we'll beat a lot of the teams who are beatable .

Sometimes you have to look at things sensibly, and not through blue tinted glasses. The fact is that West Ham are a fairly established top flight side, and they have spent the bulk of my 50 odd years as a City fan playing at the top. They are a good bit ahead of us at the moment in terms of quality players, and are not one of the sides who we will be in the relegation battle with us.

I think the majority of City fans are realistic enough to know our limitations, and considering the money that was spent assembling this squad, we are still in there fighting. Apart from a handful of fans on here (check out the predictions on this forum, some fan have us to win every game, home or away), most of us know points are going to be hard to come by. We need to win our home games against those around us, and avoid defeat when we play them away.

We may as well face it, there are not going to be a large number of good days this season. Hopefully, just enough to give us another shot in this league next season, but we are going to have a lot more of these sort of games between now and next Spring. At least we are playing against one of those sides in our own little mini league next, an good opportunity to get this defeat out of our system.

Agreed we missed a penalty and it affected the game again, just like Wolves last season where we missed two.

Overall we played well in the first half and then had a terrible 12-minute spell, but they took their chances well, it's not the end of the World, I reckon we'll beat them here, onwards and upwards to Southampton !!!

Yeah well perhaps if we were playing out of a tax payers subsidised stadium on a peppercorn rent we would be able to pay for better players.

I think that's a bit optimistic on your part. I'm afraid that whilst West Ham are an occasionally very good team, they're not doing master classes these days - maybe some of their great players of the past , but not this lot.
Cardiff City are a developing team built on commitment not money and if a few things had gone differently theyd have beaten you. I expect they will in the home game, actually.
In the days of Ron Greenwood West Ham has a fantastic reputation , as did their supporters. A real footballing team having to compete with far richer clubs but still trying to play the game and always fantastically sporting towards opponents.
Have you only recently come to live in East London perhaps ?
