Not Good Enough To Park The Bus

Mon Nov 26, 2018 7:35 pm

I think that the Everton game showed that we are not good enough to park the bus away from home. We had absolutely no forward threat at all. It was painful to watch. I think that all the loyal fans who made the journey deserved a better effort. It might not have resulted in a better result but let's make a fooking game of It!!
Warnock himself said a couple of months ago that we'd give it a go. He even said there's little point in parking the bus as we'd still be likely to lose one or two nil.
Everton were always going to get a goal with all the pressure upon us as a result of us not having players who can hold onto the ball and turn their defence.
Reid, Murphy as well as NML (when fit) need to play a big part in our team away from home. Their pace would definitey worry other teams on the break and give us something to cheer. Despite all their money I didn't think Everton were that good. We gave them too much respect. I like Warnock and realise what he's done for us but I wish he'd stick to what he said he would do.

I disagree entirely. We could easily have gotten a point or even sneaked an ( undeserved) win. We've improved a lot since Sir Neil said that and we parked the bus quite well. That's never a pretty thing to do but we do need to develop the ability to do it when it's required .
We avoided the customary cave in towards the end against a very good team and that's exactly how we've got to approach away games against this sort of team. The reason Everton didn't look that good was because of the way we played , and we didn't give them the opportunity to run amok by trying to match them all over the park .
Goal difference might well be important to us at some stage and so we can't afford to ship goals against top teams in the way we've done so far. I look forward to the day when we can rush at top teams on their own grounds, but in the mean time we must take it in small steps and try and get our goals and points in those games where it might actually happen

Man City, Liverpool and Man Utd have each managed 3 wins in their last 10 visits to at Goodison..it really is a tough place to go...and we did make a game of it, we made a very expensive team with good players look ordinary for long periods.

It's a game of opinions of course but I have to disagree...Everton's goal was coming one way or another and we were never going to score. Just ONE shot on target in the whole game.

Parked the bus and still lost.....Just like Neil predicted earlier in the season were we to adopt those tactics. Going to be an awful season if we show absolutely no ambition. Murphy through the middle with Harris and NML each side, Camarasa in behind the striker with Arter and Gunnar in midfield. That team contains enough skill and pace to worry most defences outside of the top six. Rather go down fighting in an exciting game than roll over like a wet lettuce.

yes the stats were not great, but that was often the case when winning last year..one goal behind you've always got a chance , go 2 down with this team { not complaining about the effort } its all over .

if we could play the 2nd half of the season in league 1 I would probably agree with a lot of these...my best team....how I would set up more ambitious posts , but we are not we are playing up a level with a championship team which I think means you have to stay in the game and give yourself some sort of chance

How on earth can you make an argument on something which was going to happen according to your perception ?
For a long time it didn't happen and it only happened once. This is a difficult tactic and you're not likely to get it completely right first time, but it's something you need to be able to do at this level .
No one likes it but in the real world you've sometimes got to go for damage limitation. We saw how well your philosophy works when Ollie was doing it. If we were to avoid relegation on a narrow goal difference, the fact that we didn't go running round Goodison Park like spring lambs and consequently lose 4-1 might be the reason .
There are no points awarded in the Premiership for brave attacking play in the face of a team of top international with a massive home crowd cheering them on, so I'm afraid we must save our live ammunition for situations where we might be able to make it count.
Actually I did a whole thread that we must park the bus at Everton a couple of weeks ago, and I'm sure that was the right thing to do. We came very close to a point which we couldn't have expected and avoided a scoreline which hurt our goal difference and interfered with our psychological momentum. The players can now face the wolf pups , which IS winnable ,in the frame of mind that they can compete with anyone , not smarting from another 5 goal arse kicking .
