On the international break?

We always give them two or three days off, the last time we did well after the break. I flew out on Saturday night after the game for a few days, I went to New York with Sharon. I like New York but four days is enough. I like jazz and that seems to be the place for it. I saw Frankie Valli’s show.

Was the break good?

The rest is as important as the training at times, especially in a long season. You need the extra rest in the Premier League, it’s far more physical and mental really. One or two really needed a rest.

Players back?

I’ve not spoken to Manga but that’s usual, I don’t really speak to him until kick off.

Injury latest?

Ken Zohore has not responded really, we’re disappointed. It seems to be taking an eternity to get right. Jazz Richards has had a good week, I asked him to have an intense week and he’s had that and come back alright. He needed a full week’s training. Mendez-Laing had an hour for the Under-23s as did Gary Madine because Gary’s struggled with a little niggle. So that was a good work out for the lads there and they both scored a goal.

Will we see Mendez-Laing this week?

I don’t think so, we’ve got to be a bit careful with him at the minute especially with this busy period.

Two wins in four?

Any manager when you’re not winning isn’t going to be over the moon. But training has been superb, Kevin and Ronnie have been superb. Even when we weren’t getting the results, the training has been good. It’s only been fine margins which have cost us so dearly. Look at Brighton, they had three 1-0 wins. It’s a fine margin and you need a little bit of luck.

Optimistic looking at the table?

I don’t think anything’s changed. I think we can do better than what we’ve done. We’ve got to eliminate those mistakes and continue to put teams under pressure. We’ve got a run now where we’re playing teams who are not in the top six, not beyond us.
Everton this weekend are as good as some of the teams up there.

Sol Bamba?

I always wanted him for two or three times and I always thought my kind of management would suit him. For a big lad he does take things hard at times. He’s the biggest moaner at the club and if he’s not moaning then there’s something wrong! Deep down he really cares and since I met him I told him he could play in the Premier League.

Re: PRESS CONFERENCE: NEIL WARNOCK AHEAD OF EVERTON GAME

Everton?

You look at stats and they’re the hardest working side in the Premier League at the moment. Look at Richarlison up front he’s probably worth double that £45 million. Sigurdsson has had two week’s holiday whereas Aron has been all over the world. Jagielka speaks very highly of the whole club so there’s no reason why they can’t push into the top five over the next few years. They’ve had some lean spells but I’ve got a lot of time for the club - and I’ve always done quite well there as a manager.

Away win?

Everyone knows that if you’re going to stay up, it’s going to be your home form. Away wins are so few and far between for the bottom clubs but over the next few weeks we’ve got an opportunity.

Ranieri to Fulham?

I was disappointed in Slavisa leaving his job, but it’s football. It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth when a manager gets appointed five minutes after you’ve sacked somebody - but that’s football, it’s a horrible injury. It’s one part of football that I detest. I don’t think the LMA have got any input. We know that’s the industry. All the managers at the bottom end know that could happen. Vincent tells me how many agents and managers are ringing him telling him to sack me.

VAR?

I’m delighted, I feel it benefits the smaller clubs more than the bigger clubs. It will only help the honesty of the game. We’ve got the best referees in the world, but to make us better VAR will eliminate so many things.

Marco Silva?

I think it’s all down to the manager, he changes things. You don’t do it overnight and while Marco has done well in the league, he’s had relegations in the past. I’ve been in the situation he was in at Watford and it takes your mind off things when people chase you and want you. He seems a nice bloke, he wants his team to do well.
When I see Seamus Coleman bombing on, I like him. He’s my type of player. I don’t think we could afford him but I’ll ask Sol to have a word with him if he wants to come.

Management?

I would say 90 per cent of it nowadays is man management because the players are so good. Even with Pep. I still don’t understand those who make notes during the game. I’m not sure whether it’s a shopping list or what! But each to their own

Is the break good or not? Plus transfer targets?

Even to get players another few weeks like Jazz Richards, that’s really helped us. Even Gunnars, he doesn’t train every day for us. He trains two days a week. That’s why going away with his international team was such a risk. We haven’t got another defensive midfield player at the club, we’ve tried other people but that’s one position we have to be looking at in January.

The main priority is a full-back, a centre midfielder and a striker. We’re only allowed one other loan from an English club so we have to prioritise which player we want on loan and then look abroad. It makes common sense for us to get players on loan rather than spending massive money. But if the right striker came about for the right money, Vincent would listen to us. Over the next four or five weeks, we need to get one or two in straight away really.

The way Everton played against Chelsea, we know how difficult it’s going to be. Goodison is a good ground, a good atmosphere and our fans will be there in large numbers. I’m sure the fans will look forward to another journey up there.

Drogba retiring?

He was in the second division in France and I had a scout who told me to sign him for £100,000 and I said no way for that money, it’s too much. And then he went to Chelsea for £15million and my scout used to ring me. Yeah, one that got away there.
I remember betting on Chelsea to win the FA Cup in 2007 and I jumped up when Drogba scored the winner.

70th birthday?

You don’t celebrate your birthdays after you reach 50 really. I was going to retire after I left Sheffield United but that’s football really. I’m pleased the Premier League have brought the game forward, a nice friendly game against Wolves so I can have Saturday out with the family (on his 70th birthday).
You’ve got to grasp everything when you can and I had probably the best four days of my life in New York with Sharon really.

Relegation battle?

There’s a lot bigger clubs than us down in that relegation battle and it’ll be interesting how they take it.

Playing down survival hopes?

Maybe that’s a Yorkshire trait, fudging it really. But I just think you’ve got to tell the truth, you’ve only got to look at the odds - ourselves and Huddersfield are big favourites to go down but both great clubs. Dean their chairman has said the manager’s staying no matter what… I don’t think Vincent has done that yet.
We wanted to build a team to get into the Championship play-offs, and now we’re building a team to stay in the Premier League. So we’ve moved on quickly and with the type of football we’re playing. To see 16 passes in that goal against Brighton was amazing.
My lads text me when they saw England scoring from a long throw… there’s nothing wrong with a long throw! People want to play perfect football but sometimes it doesn’t work.

Fans?

It feels unique to me, usually if you’re down the bottom of the table the fans give you stick. I think a lot of English people now want Cardiff to stay up because we’re underdogs and it’s exciting to be like that. Normally there’s so much criticism. It’s a fabulous feeling because the energy home and away from the fans is a big plus for us.

Nice the way he takes pressure off players. The last thing Gunnars needs now is a rest when hes playing catchup where fitness is concerned.

Cardiff City boss makes massive Richarlison claim and reveals the Everton FC player he'd like to sign

Daily Post

Thursday 22nd November 2018

The value of Everton's Richarlison’s has doubled claims a Premier League rival.

The Brazilian’s fee when joining the Blues from Watford over the summer was a subject of much debate - especially with England international turned pundit Paul Merson who claimed it had somehow “spoiled the transfer window” - but following an impressive start to his Goodison Park career that has now seen the 21-year-old score nine goals for club and country so far, his stock seems to be sky high.

Neil Warnock, manager of Cardiff City who Everton face on Saturday has certainly been impressed report the Liverpool Echo.

Speaking to reporters ahead of his side's trip to Goodison Park, Warnock said: “Everton this weekend are as good as some of the teams up there.

“You look at stats and they’re the hardest working side in the Premier League at the moment.

“Look at Richarlison up front he’s probably worth double that £45m.

“Sigurdsson has had two week’s holiday whereas Aron (Gunnarsson, who was selected for international duty with Iceland last week while Gylfi was injured) has been all over the world.

“Jagielka (who played for Warnock at Sheffield United before joining Everton in 2007) speaks very highly of the whole club so there’s no reason why they can’t push into the top five over the next few years.

“They’ve had some lean spells but I’ve got a lot of time for the club - and I’ve always done quite well there as a manager.”

Meanwhile, Warnock was also full of praise for new manager Marco Silva’s contribution this season and the way he has Seamus Coleman playing.

He said: “I think it’s all down to the manager, he changes things.

“You don’t do it overnight and while Marco has done well in the league, he’s had relegations in the past.

“I’ve been in the situation he was in at Watford and it takes your mind off things when people chase you and want you. He seems a nice bloke, he wants his team to do well.

“When I see Seamus Coleman bombing on, I like him. He’s my type of player. I don’t think we could afford him but I’ll ask Sol (Bamba, the Cardiff centre-back) to have a word with him if he wants to come.”
