Strange to see fences in 1977.

Also, there’s 2 blocks wearing what looks like butchers coats but these had gone out of fashion by 77..

Photos are from Spurs book :thumbright:

A lad called Mickey Dunn, an old head Spurs fan gave them to me,lives in Santa Ponsa near me.

We had the fences put up due to Wales v Yugoslavia, when Welsh fans invaded the pitch.

Yes I remember the Yugoslavia game. I always remember a picture of 1 lad with the corner flag.

I don’t remember Spurs travelling that well in the 70s. This was their season in the 2nd division though wasn’t it?

They signed Ardiles and Villa in the following summer. Their first home game was on a Wednesday night against us. It was hyped up and we beat them 4-1. We hadn’t took many down there but I went. It was very moody afterwards. I went on to have many dodgy trips to Spurs over the years, some went our way, others didn’t. One of my most memorable football rows was down there in the early 90s. It even carried on at the hospital afterward.

I was there I was 13, was in Grange end the spurs fans looked like monsters and were getting pelted with missiles, remember my mate had a tangerine in his pocket, he ate the tanga and there the peel at them lol, after the game they tried forcing the Grange end gates and Cardiff couldn't get out at first and stragglers were getting battered , city fans stood on top of turnstiles throwing missiles at them, eventually city got out and I believe done the business ( I was made to stay in Grange end with other kids by the older lads) a bit scary for a kid but a wonderful buzz aswell that stayed with me

Spurs were in Div 2 late 70’s and then then they came to Cardiff really up for it in the FA Cuo.

1977 Cup

1977-78 League 2

Ardilles and Villa were fantastic for them :thumbright:

More from Alan Virgo fb

I still remember the sight of the older lads with long hair, sheepskin coats and flares stood on the turnstiles roof screaming at the others to pass them ammunition, then the city fans opening the gates and piling out, don't think it lasted long outside,we were made to leave via the Bob bank

They were in the enclosure, they got done outside the craddock before the game.nobody thought they would be up for it after the game but they were fair play to them.

Back then, the FA Cup was massive. Everyone travelled in big numbers to the cup games.

Yes. 77 they would have been in the 1st division for the cup. It would have been the 78 cup season that they were in division 2.

yes was the 1st time we had played them in eons..so we had 28k in .

we did also play a league game at home against them at start of 77/78 season after their relegation which was pretty uneventful..

as you say they were not the best travellers, but for the cup game they were very good....

Spurs were never on Grange End. That photo is not the home Grange End. It was the Enclosure under the Granstand looking at the Canton Stand. Yes they came out and had a go at the Grange End after the game. Front page Echo did show they turned over a 3 Wheel disabled car. Also Spurs got done at the Craddock and all the way up Tudor Road. Felt sorry for 2 Spurs lads on Tudor Road when Cardiff fan ripped bin off lamp post and launched an all out attack on them.

Wasn't just a few. When it went off in those days hundreds sometimes thousands were involved.

100% correct, it was never the minority in them days, it was actually the majority of City fans up for it.

I remember practically the whole Grange end coming over onto the bob bank to get at the Everton fans just before the start of the 1977 cup game. Must have been thousands involved in that, with a thin line of 20 or so coppers trying (unsuccessfully) to keep order.

Thats really how it was in them days.

When we went away if we took a 1,000 fans, anything up to 800 would be up for it.

If clubs like West Ham, Chelsea, Swansea , Bristol City came to Cardiff and wanted trouble, The Bob Bank, Grange end etc would virtually all run over.

I can remember as a kid the offs with the midlands clubs on the old grange end, the old man always liked to be in the ground early and Birmingham, Leicester and Villa would have the Grange to themselves until ten to three when the special would arrive in. The sight of a thousand City fans making their way across the bob bank heading for the grange was like something out of Zulu. By kick off the grange was back with the City with the chant "12345 if you wanna stay alive, keep off the grangend"
and not a visiting fan in sight. Only one club ever took the grange end and that was Portsmouth in 1973. Spurs charged at the end of the cup game in 77 but other than that no one else came close although if the fences weren't erected for the Man U game there would have been a bloodbath

No he never got off with it. He went to jail for a few years. He always maintained he was innocent even after he came out. If I remember the flag pole wounded a copper in the shoulder. Slavs and Wales went on pitch , plenty of violence ended with Wales being banned from playing at Cardiff for years. Sieg Heiling the East German ref didn’t help either. :old:

I was 18 and remember coming out of the grange end to a sea of yids, Spurs everywhere, at first they backed Cardiff off into the grange end, but then cardiff charged and steamed straight into spurs, it was mental outside with cardiff eventually getting the better of the spurs mob. Trouble all the way back to the station up and down Tudor Road :bluebird:
