Neil Warnock believes Premier League big guns are 'a bit beyond' Cardiff City after reflecting on Liverpool loss

The Cardiff boss made the admission after the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool

Neil Warnock has admitted beating the very best teams in the Premier League is "a bit beyond" his side despite watching a gallant Cardiff City effort in defeat to Liverpool.

The Bluebirds enjoyed a purple patch in the 4-1 loss at Anfield, during the second half in which Callum Paterson pulled a goal back and the visitors threatened to level.

But ultimately Liverpool proved too strong, bringing Xherdan Shaqiri off the bench to put the game beyond doubt.

The defeat means Cardiff have played every one of the league's top five this season and lost every on each occasion, but Warnock wasn't too disheartened.

"It's good that we can compete, we're not just turning up for these games," said Warnock.

"We’ll surprise a few of the lesser teams. The top four are a bit beyond us, although I was disappointed we didn't beat Arsenal at home."

On a day that saw Cardiff's relegation rivals fail to muster a goal between them - with Huddersfield and Fulham both beaten 3-0 while Southampton and Newcastle drew 0-0 - Warnock was keen to look ahead to crucial home games against Leicester and Brighton at home.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"The rest of the season will be decided on what we do in the remaining games away from the top six," he said.

"We’ve done well lately, we did well against Burnley, Tottenham away and Fulham last week.

"We've played all the top teams now apart from Man United and we haven't really been pasted.

"But you don’t get them every week, the top five.

"It’s been hard for us against these teams. That little bit of quality catches you out and makes the difference."

Warnock confirmed he removed Josh Murphy as a mere precaution with a view to those two upcoming home fixtures, so too Aron Gunnarsson.

Harry Arter was omitted from the matchday squad for the same reason after carrying a slight knock, though Warnock was also concerned the tough-tackling midfield man could pick up a fifth yellow card - and a suspension - at Anfield.

On Murphy, Warnock said: "He's alright, he just wanted to come off I think.

"I think the full back was quite pleased as well!

"But we've got big games so I didn't want to risk him or Gunnarsson. We are so short of players at the minute. I didn't want to risk Harry Arter either.

"Gunnarsson is not 100 per cent fit yet so it's disappointing (to take him off) as I thought he did well for us, he held us together and once he went we hadn't got that safety valve in front of the back four," added Warnock.

"But we've got one or two important games coming up and we can't really risk him."

I think Warnock has a talent for stating the obvious be that as it may I'm beginning to think that our so called defence will cost us our Premiership position yes come January we need to sign a quality striker but I urge Warnock to bring in some quality defenders as well because our current back four are simply not up to the job

We're not near them yet but Bournemouth are a fantastic side at the moment. Doesn't mean we're bad and we're not on our way to that level though?!

Bournemouth are a top side, I agree. Wouldn’t shock me if they got a top half finish.

Also been in this league a lot longer than us.

People look down on them because of the size of their club, but they’re a good few years ahead of us.

I’m happy - we’re outside the relegation having played all the top clubs apart from Man Utd. Two big home games coming up now. If we can get four points, we’ll be in a strong position before the break.

Bournemouth have built up over the past 4 yrs and are relatively established while we are not! And so have the players to challenge top 6 sides! We simply don't have that luxury but we have had a go at them all except man c only falling down late into the games, last week a top 6 side took Burnley apart 5-0 and they are more than capable of beating top 6 side .

Even Sean dyche has said in interview, that "the top six are beyond us"from what I have read.17th will do,then and only then, will we start to grow, and be able to compete with others around us on transfers for instance?I set my stall at 15th,and have no reason to change my mind, however if we finish 17th,by the width of the hair on a gnats ball sack,I will be a happy man :ayatollah:
