Diane Abbott in yet another GAFFE as Labour MP gets 999 number WRONG at party conference

Labour Conference: Diane Abbott makes blunder during speech

Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott once again demonstrated the tumultuous relationship with numbers as she cut down to the 999 emergency number to two figures.

Addressing attendees at her keynote speech during the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool, Ms Abbott began talking about the rising number of calls to the urgent response contact but soon stumbled over the number itself.

She said: "Response time to 99 calls are increasing, violent crime is increasing."

This was not the first time the Labour frontbencher appeared to struggle with numbers.

The shadow Home Secretary famously forgot how much Labour’s plans for reforming police policy would cost the country during an awkward interview ahead of the 2017 General Election.

Ms Abbott caused a storm when she got muddled telling LBC host Nick Ferrari Labour would spend £300,000 over four years on thousands of new coppers - the equivalent of just £30 per officer.

Ms Abbott later defended herself, insisting she knew her figures but had "misspoke" after an intense morning spent doing the news round.

She told the BBC: “I did seven interviews that morning and that was the seventh, I misspoke, but I do know my figures.”

Labour Conference: Voters share views on the People's Vote

Voters share their views on the People's Vote at the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool. One voter says the public must be given a option to vote and have an option 'to remain.' Whilst another says people want a vote to get the result they wanted.

Diane Abbott
In April, Ms Abbott weighed into London’s knife crime crisis yesterday – with a bogus statistic. The gaffe-prone Labour MP laid the blame for the capital’s soaring death rate firmly at Whitehall’s door.

She said it was time the Government took lessons in tackling knife thugs. Writing in a newspaper yesterday, she warned against random stop and search by police and called for a more “holistic” approach.

She said: “We need to apply lessons learned from other parts of the UK and abroad in the fight against serious crime, including knife and gun crime.”

To emphasise her point, she highlighted how knife crime has been tackled in Glasgow, the biggest city in a country labelled “the most violent in the developed world” by the United Nations in 2005.

Ms Abbott said: “But there also needs to be more done in youth work, in schools, even mental health,” adding: “They have brought the number of deaths from knife crime down to zero last year.”

But knife killings continue to blight Scotland, including Glasgow.

Scottish Tory MSP Liam Kerr said it was a “patently inaccurate” claim, adding: “Knife-related violence remains a huge problem.”

corbyn and the labour party have their faults, but the country is going to hell under the conservatives.

millions and millions have lost their dignity. NHS and schools crippled. mass poverty.

just because people are poor does not in itself make them lazy. i'd sooner subsidise a working man, than a landlord.

Re: what a tw*t

We've got some pretty poor alternatives on all sides haven't we ?

Thing is though that there's always going to be some arsehole who gets themselves into a position where you've got to pay them for being alive. How they do that, who they are and what they say is of no account whatever. Makes no difference in the end whether they took power by means of conning gullible people into voting for them or did it by force.

They're all just parasites in the end and the best thing anyone can do is keep out if their way as much as possible and under no circumstances become involved in their affairs or schemes. Don't believe any of their crap or expect them to do anything except accumulate power and wealth for themselves because you'll be dissapointed every time and if you're really unlucky you'll find yourself getting shot whilst fighting some war for them which they've somehow contrived for their own benefit.

We can see from the way they're determined to overturn the Brexit vote that democracy is a big sham, so I suggest that mad Corby and freaky Theresa just toss a coin for it and then no one needs to listen to their childish contrived bickering or pay the considerable expenses of an election without any candidates who you'd trust to run a chip shop.

I have been Labour all of my life however I cannot support Corbyn the Communist , especially with with the totally incompetent Diane Abbott in the party. What an absolute Muppet. Descent leaders would win Labour the next election.

I saw a clip of them leaving their conference and they all looked as if they needed sectioning.
Don't worry though, if you don't like that lot you can have the transsexual reanimated corpse assisted by Boris the clown and a bunch of 25 year old knob heads you've never really heard of.

Someone MUST be telling them what to do in the background or they'd never find their own way into Westminster and back home every night.

OP has a very outdated view. the reality is that nowadays most people in poverty work full time - it's just that the jobs being created under this government do not pay a living wage. we have record corporate profits, and the rich keep getting richer and richer. corporation tax is at a record low.

wages are below where they were in 2008 for the average brit. we are currently in an age that is almost unheard of in modern history - a consistent decline in living standards. unless you are in the top 10% why would you vote for policies that will ensure this continues?

the economically illiterate policy of austerity has had the predictable effect of making the poor and lower middle class poorer. f**k this government.

the trouble with education and the NHS is no matter who is in power opponents will be critical..
ive been unfortunate enough this year to have 2 close relatives require surgery and numerous visits to hospitals...their treatment has been very good...i have 3 grand children all of junior school age who each attend different new {within last 10 years } schools and seem to be getting a decent education...
should we have an election and those in power change im sure both will continue to be fine..

really dont like either side using these topics as there will never ever be enough money for perfection..

I’m a landlord, I got property by working my nuts off, I don’t “work” in the public sector or for a multi national where I’m guaranteed a good pension yet according to you I should give what is effectively my pension to someone who’s not worked as hard as myself. As for losing dignity? WTF are you on about. Millions and millions in poverty  where are these millions and at a time when more people are employed in the U.K. than ever before why aren’t the lazy Bastards working. The reason the NHS, schools, social services etc are struggling is down to mass immigration from third world countries.

Hats off to you on a personal note, you've worked hard. Those millions you referred to are the ones that are working for minimum wage and even zero hrs contracts are counted as employed.I'm sure you were tongue in check making that statement as the Tories have seen to it that you don't have to be out of work to experience poverty. For me,I've had a twatful of austerity.Theres no need for it now(Christ even Greece has recovered)its about time the government started investing in people again.Even our prisons are becoming third world.Of course this this could all be the governments preparation for a post Brexit Britain.

The financial crisis happened on Labours watch and we needed to be austere, Labour would simply borrow more and store up even worse problems in the longer term. Wages are actually rising as inward migration falls. I know we’re all different but for me the life choice is self reliance or state dependence, if your job is low paid take steps to find a better paying job or start your own business.

ultimately the financial crisis was caused by a lack of regulation on the banks. guess who advocated for even less control over the banks? i'll leave you to work out that one.

but... but... labour overspent....... well the conservatives promised to match labour's spending. the truth is that under the conservatives, the financial crash would have been worse, not better.

very easy to say - come to think of it why don't poor people in africa and asia also just 'get a new job'? jesus christ the ignorance. most of the new jobs being created under this government are low quality, unskilled service jobs. fast food, call centres, cleaning, manual car washes as the UK economy transitions into a low productivity, low wage society. this is largely down to the lack of any migration control (which i accept labour would not change), but it's also impacted by the systematic and ideological weakening of trade unions.
