I watched a documentary today on amazon about the Leeds Utd team under Howard Wilkinson, and watching it I couldn’t help but notice the similarities in that story compared to what we are experiencing right now under Warnock. “Do you want to win” it was called.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that we could finish 4th this season and win the title next, but it’s about the atmosphere around the club, the momentum, and the predicament they were in before.
Howard Wilkinson, ridiculed by other fans yet adamant in what he wanted to achieve, just like Warnock. (The “like Warnock” theme continues after each point)
Took over 4th from bottom of the old league 2.
Everyone was writing them off.
Brought in key players he trusted and had worked with before.
Created a spirit of togetherness and did everything as a team.
Got them promoted the following season.
Carried on the momentum into the old league 1
A big thing was made of them being a one club city regarding support.
Listening to the to the ex players, chairman and Wilkinson himself I couldn’t help but make the comparison with City.
Now we all know what happened after that before anyone says it, but it was Risdale after they won the old division 1 that took over and truly fu##ed them up for a long time, well he has already done that to us anyway. They had no real infrastructure or foundations at the time like we have been building since our last visit to the premier league.
So as long as we can carry the momentum and team spirit, work ethic and Warnock’s vision then who knows, we could be here for a good long while this time around and in our own way surprise a lot of others just like that Leeds team and Howard Wilkinson did ?
