Paul Merson's bizarre Cardiff City vs Arsenal prediction that makes absolutely no sense

The pundit has given a strange take on the Premier League's Sunday game

Many pundits have been casting their predictions for Cardiff City's game against Arsenal, with the pendulum inevitably swinging towards the Gunners.

Sky Sports pundit (and former Arsenal star) Paul Merson is no different, believing Unai Emery's side will take victory at Cardiff City Stadium.

But what he's actually said about the game, coupled with his prediction, doesn't stack up.




"I watch Arsenal play and I seriously think it's a charity match," he begins.

"It's so open, end to end, there's no tackling and it's like watching ex-professionals playing. I've not seen anything like it, the West Ham game was just unreal.

"If the game opens up and Arsenal can play then there's only one winner."

All of that is fair enough, Arsenal should be favourites, but the next comment suggests Merson gives Neil Warnock's side a real chance.

"Cardiff will be loving this game; they live on scraps — a free-kick here, a corner there — and if they get enough of them they could cause an upset.



Okay, so Merse reckons the Bluebirds can get a result on Sunday, right?

"I don't know why I've gone for 3-0, because I don't see how Cardiff can't score, and if they get enough free-kicks and corners before the end of the game Arsenal could shoot themselves in the foot."

And yet he's predicted a 3-0 win for the Gunners? Even after that point, the Soccer Saturday favourite's explanation is rather muddled to say the least.

"The first goal is massive — that's not even the word, Cardiff haven't scored yet. If you didn't know Emery wasn't there, you'd think Arsene Wenger was still manager. But Emery doesn't have the personnel, this is the way the players have played since year dot. It's hard to change things that quickly. It's hard work doing this press, it takes a lot of dedication and hard work during the week.

"And it won't work against Cardiff, as they get the ball forward quickly. Arsenal have to move it quickly and attack quickly too
