About Arsenal

Arsenal Football Club is a professional football club based in Islington, London, England, that plays in the Premier League, the top flight of English football. The club has won 13 League titles, a record 13 FA Cups, two League Cups, the League Centenary Trophy, 15 FA Community Shields, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and one Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

Arsenal was the first club from the South of England to join The Football League, in 1893, and they reached the First Division in 1904. Relegated only once, in 1913, they continue the longest streak in the top division, and have won the second-most top-flight matches in English football history. In the 1930s, Arsenal won five League Championships and two FA Cups, and another FA Cup and two Championships after the war. In 1970–71, they won their first League and FA Cup Double. Between 1989 and 2005, they won five League titles and five FA Cups, including two more Doubles. They completed the 20th century with the highest average league position.

Herbert Chapman won Arsenal's first national trophies, but died prematurely. He helped introduce the WM formation, floodlights, and shirt numbers, and added the white sleeves and brighter red to Arsenal's kit. Arsène Wenger was the longest-serving manager and won the most trophies. He won a record 7 FA Cups, and his title-winning team set an English record for the longest top-flight unbeaten league run at 49 games between 2003 and 2004, receiving the nickname The Invincibles, and a special gold Premier League trophy.

In 1886, Woolwich munitions workers founded the club as Dial Square. In 1913, the club crossed the city to Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, becoming close neighbours of Tottenham Hotspur, and creating the North London derby. In 2006, they moved to the nearby Emirates Stadium. In terms of revenue, Arsenal was the sixth highest-earning football club in the world, earned €487.6m in 2016–17 season. Based on social media activity from 2014–15, Arsenal's fanbase is the fifth largest in the world. In 2018, Forbes estimated the club was the third most valuable in England, with the club being worth $2.24 billion.

Previous Meeting

We last played Arsenal on New Years Day in 2014. We lost 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium, after late goals by Nicklas Bendtner and Theo Walcott.

This is probably the perfect match for our players and style.

Arsenal are slow and weak defensively. We can get behind them with our pace. We just need to take our chance when it comes.

They will control midfield and are dangerous but if we can stay strong defensively we have a chance to grab a point.

They are no liverpool or Man City

Back to the important stuff after tonight's defeat. I can't see any way we can compete with Arsenal, and a point would be a big bonus if we could pull it off. Unfortunately, I think Arsenal will be at least two goals better than us, but I live in hope and perhaps we will shock a few people, including me, and suddenly we will be potential champions rather than relegation fodder (for a few days anyway). ;)

Neil Warnock addressed the assembled press and media at Cardiff City Stadium, following the Bluebirds’ Carabao Cup Round Two clash against Norwich City on Tuesday evening.

The Gaffer began by revealing his thoughts on the match, before looking ahead to Sunday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal.

“It wasn’t meant to be tonight,” began Neil in reference to the Cup defeat. “I think it showed that quite a lot of the lads needed games because we were a little bit off the pace. You can’t get what we got tonight on the training ground; we need competitive games like that.

“There were four or five positives regarding my squad selection [for Sunday] and obviously disappointments, so it’s a mixed feeling really. We had better chances than Norwich, but we haven’t been taking them all season, which is disappointing.

“It’s opened my eyes towards Sunday’s team selection and I more or less know what my team is going to be. Tonight, didn’t put me off that and I have a starting eleven in mind. I said to the lads that it shows they’ve got to train really hard if they’re not in the team and take their opportunity when it comes.
“The depth is there and we’ve got to make sure we keep the fitness levels up for the lads that aren’t involved. The Premier League is such a massive step up from the Championship, which is what we’ve been used to, regarding movement and things like that.

“We’ve got to take the Premier League onboard and enjoy it. It’ll be so difficult for us in the next few weeks but we’ve got a great bunch, a great set of fans and we’ve just got to enjoy it. I’ve got to come up with a recipe to give our fans something to cheer about during the game. I think we’ve got to do the best we can to get the crowd on their feet. That’s what we’re here for, that’s what we got promoted for and I don’t think we should miss out on that.”

I can't see anything other than an Arsenal victory despite the fact that their style of playing a high defensive line and compressing the pitch should suit us as the pace of players like Zohore and Murphy will suit the acres of ground Arsenal will leave for these players to run into.

Unfortunately our style of play involves parking 10 players within 30 meters of our own goal so we will compress the pitch for Arsenal and for me we will struggle to get out of our own half in meaningful numbers. So far this season our strength has been our defensive organisation so let's hope that will enable us to get a draw out of this difficult match.

We will be a stronger unit on Sunday compared to last night and I've no doubt that NW will relish the task as will our players, the question is who will replace Hoilett? On the evidence of last night it has to be Danny Ward.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing will miss at least three months

Sky Sports

29/08/18

Cardiff winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing faces three months on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury.

Mendez-Laing was carried off during the Premier League draw against Huddersfield three days ago, and City manager Neil Warnock confirmed – after a 3-1 Carabao Cup second-round loss to Norwich – the extent of his injury.

"He has done his posterior cruciate ligament, which is good news, my physio says, because if he had done his anterior that’s all season," Warnock said.

The referee has been announced for Arsenal's Premier League clash against Cardiff City this weekend.

And, it is mixed news for Unai Emery's side.

Anthony Taylor will take charge of the clash at the Cardiff City Stadium and the Gunners - well former manager Arsene Wenger mainly - have a very interesting history when it comes to this particular official.

This is the sort of game we’ve all been waiting for. This is why most of us wanted to get to the premier league, so we can compete against the top clubs. I know Arsenal haven’t been up there winning the league in quite a while but they are a top 6 giant and will be full of quality. If our players can achieve a result from this game, I’m going to go mad! :D :ayatollah: :bluescarf: :bluescarf:

Come on everyone, let’s get the stadium really noisy and be the 12th man. Whatever the score lets enjoy it and create a great atmosphere full of pride for our team who are in the top division! :bluescarf:

Early Arsenal team news

We’ll be hearing from Neil Warnock about the latest from the Cardiff City camp tomorrow morning, but there’s already a little bit of team news coming out of the Arsenal camp.

Mesut Ozil is expected to return after his omission during the win over West Ham United last weekend, while Alexandre Lacazette could well be in line for a start.

This from our colleagues over at Football.London:

Emery may play both Lacazette and Aubameyang in Cardiff, with Aubameyang operating on the left hand side with the Frenchman as the central striker.

Another player who could be handed his first start of the season is Lucas Torreira, with the £27 million summer signing expected to get the nod in front of Matteo Guendouzi alongside Granit Xhaka in the heart of midfield.

Once again, there will be no Ainsley Maitland-Niles (fractured fibula) and Sead Kolasinac (knee) due to injury. Laurent Koscielny remains sidelined despite having returned to light training following the ruptured Achilles he sustained in May.

Can Cardiff end their Premier League goal drought?

Cardiff City’s struggles to score in the Premier League have been pretty well-documented, and history suggests they may have trouble rectifying that against Arsenal on Sunday.

In fact, Cardiff have scored just once in five competitive meetings with the Gunners - a single Cameron Jerome strike in the FA Cup back in January 2006.

Not to put too much of a downer on things, but you’ve also got to go back to February 1961 for the last time Cardiff actually beat the Gunners in a competitive game, a 3-2 win at Highbury in the old Division One.

Ozil And Lacazette To Start? | 4-2-3-1 Arsenal Predicted Lineup Vs Cardiff City

Arsenal will make a long journey to Wales to take on Cardiff City at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday following their hard-fought 3-1 win over West Ham United in the London derby last weekend. The Gunners have had a mediocre start to their league campaign after being beaten by Manchester City and Chelsea before their victory in the previous gameweek.

Unai Emery needs to get a run of favourable results in the coming weeks to keep pace with the Premier League’s big boys in the league standings. However, they will come across a Bluebirds side desperate for their first victory of the season.

The Gunners could opt for a 4-2-3-1 formation, but Mesut Ozil might be excluded from the match-day squad once again after failing to contribute during the first two league matches of this campaign.

Warnock on Arsenal

NEIL WARNOCK:

I’ve been pitting my wits against Wenger and my favourite story is from my 1000th game - at the Emirates - and I was looking to Arsene and said ‘look how much it’s changed and how far the dugouts are, you won’t hear me today!’ And he said ‘Neil, you will find a way!’. I’ve had some good times with Arsene and the grass isn’t always greener. But I like Emery I think he’s got great vision and some great players, it’s great to pit your wits against them. Arsenal is very special to me. The first game I remember going to with my Dad was at Highbury. The same at Bramall Lane, the first I remember was against Arsenal. I think it’s a lovely club.”

Arsenal boss confirms duo could be recalled to start against Cardiff

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has confirmed that Mesut Ozil and Lucas Torreira are both in contention to start against Cardiff City on Sunday afternoon.

Ozil missed our 3-1 comeback victory over West Ham last weekend due to an apparent illness with initial reports suggesting he had called in sick following a training ground row with Emery after being told he’d be on the bench.

Subsequent reports claim Ozil genuinely had laryngitis and wasn’t able to play against the Hammers but the German playmaker returned to full training with the rest of the squad earlier this week.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference today, Emery confirmed that Ozil has been training fully all week and is in contention to return to the starting eleven against Cardiff on Sunday.

Fans are eager to see more of summer signing Torreira as he’s impressed off the bench in each of our opening three games following his £26m move from Sampdoria in July.

Emery says the Uruguayan international is working hard to break in to the side and Torreira could finally make his full debut at the Cardiff City Stadium this weekend.

Emery told Arsenal.com:

on Mesut Ozil…
He’s training normally with the group, in every session this week. We started on Tuesday and every day he has been training with the group. He’s OK. Also I’m looking at him well every day.

on whether Lucas Torreira is close to starting…
I am very happy with the player and I think every player can play. They also are working very well every day and demanding me with their works, to start the games. I like this spirit and also the possibility to play for the first 11 is okay. Then there is a possibility to stay in the match and then play. Every player, I am really, really very happy with how they are working and not only with Lucas, but for all.

Arsenal last played Cardiff in the Premier League in January of 2014, a match that they won 2-0, and the Welsh club spent the next four seasons in the Championship. Aaron Ramsey, likely to start tomorrow, came to Arsenal from Cardiff in 2008.

As expected, Sead Kolasinac and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are still out with their respective injuries, but Mesut Özil is feeling better and will probably be back in the lineup. Meanwhile, Cardiff will be missing midfielder Aron Gunnarsson, who played for Iceland at the World Cup, and forward Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.
