John Hartson's searingly honest 70-second live TV interview about his cancer has blown people away -

BT Sport

Monday 27th August 2018

Former Wales international football star John Hartson has opened up on his battle with cancer and the personal 'ignorance' he says allowed it to spread and almost kill him nine years ago.

In an emotional piece of live broadcasting on BT Sport's Saturday Morning Savage show , Hartson told host Robbie Savage about how the disease affected his life and the good that eventually came from it.

Hartson was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2009 that spread to his lungs and brain. And he revealed he ignored testicular lumps for around five years before seeking medical advice.

JOHN HARTSON:

"The cancer was a huge, huge scare for my family. I've got five young children and I allowed the cancer to spread from my testicles to my lungs and brain because I left lumps down below for four or five years. I was ignorant of my health."

Hartson went on to talk about the extensive chemotherapy he underwent, as well as two brain operations.

"I am very blessed, very lucky to have come out of that. I've set up the John Hartson Foundation so there has been lots of good that has come from it."

When Savage then suggested Hartson is "so lucky to be alive", the former Celtic and Arsenal striker replied: "Yeh, I feel blessed. That's the word, I was lucky."

The segment ended with Savage and Hartson embracing on the studio sofa and sparked a huge social media reaction, with people praising the Welshman's "amazing" honesty.

Former Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand, who lost his wife Rebecca to breast cancer in 2015, tweeted: "Powerful words/ story of an absolute gent of the game. Love this @JohnHartson10. Massive respect talking on ya fight against cancer. Fantastic work the @HartsFND are doing."

Others described Hartson as an "inspiration, a warrior and a legend". Thousands of people have now watched the video clip on social media.

The John Hartson Foundation was set up to raise awareness of testicular cancer among young men. The main thrust of their mission statement is to:

Raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of testicular cancer, thereby encouraging men to seek medical attention leading to vital early detection and diagnosis.

Preserve and protect the health of patients suffering from testicular cancer by providing and assisting in the provision of facilities and support services not normally provided by statutory authorities.

Relieve the distress of cancer sufferers and their families by assisting in the provision of counselling and support services.

Annis, as you know I inadvertently spent some time with John Harrison last year and found him to be a genuinely nice guy; a man who came close to death, freely admits his mistakes in life, has worked hard to get back on track and appreciates the 'second chance' opportunities he has been given. He has a very strong family around him and the strength of support from his lovely wife is immense

He spoke well of you and I think sometimes we have to look well beyond the tribal rivalries. It is all too easy to be blasé towards a so-called rival but I wish him nothing but the best for his and his family's future! :thumbright: :ayatollah:

I hope men take note of what JH went through because testicular cancer, if diagnosed early enough, has one of the highest success rates for treatment. I hope he didn’t put off visiting the doctor, which a lot of men do, which may have caused his cancer to spread to other parts of his body. Good luck to him and his family for the future.
