Handball rule in Football

Sun Aug 26, 2018 8:34 pm

Is there a rule in football about a goal being given if the ball comes of a players arm unintentionally ? Or are all goals ruled out if the ref spots it because that's the norm?!
I know there is a rule for a penalty but this is different.

its open to interpretation but no wont always be ruled out really depends on refs interpretation of handball like if ball hits hand from 6 ins after been kicked by opponent and goes in i've seen them given, yesterdays would be ruled out as clearly ball only went in because of hitting hand even if was accidentally.

The handball rule was written in the way it was to prevent players deliberately handling it to alter its flight because the hand and arm are the most manouverable part of the body. Therefore if the player didn't deliberately handle it (or at least leave his hand/arm deliberately in a position where it would stop the ball) it's not handball whatever the implications or wherever on the pitch it happened. If a defender is on the line and a forward hits the ball from six inches which hits the defenders hand and it stops it from going in its not a penalty if the defender knew nothing about it. The Wolves goal on Saturday was not handball because in my opinion the guy did not intend to handle it as the deflection from his own man just took it away from his head and it hit his arm instead. (Should have been offside though).

It never ceases to amaze me when commentators and so called experts say it was handball because the ball hit his hand. If the ball hits his hand - rather than the other way round - then its likely to be non deliberate and therefore not handball Good referees apply this common sense but unfortunately a lot don't, having never played the game themselves.

I just wish the law was changed to handball is handball - simple.Cuts out all the nonsense and arguments and makes the game easier.
At the end of the day Football is a game where it’s meant to be played with all parts of the body except the hands and arms.

Wolves goal should have not have been allowed, end of........if it was a defender who’s hand it hit trying to head it , it would have been a penalty so what’s the difference.

No it wouldn't have been if the referee judged it to be unintentional

If the law was changed teams wouldn't be trying to score from open play but would get into situations where the ball hit a players hand as it would be far easier to win a penalty than to go to the hassle of scoring. The nature of the game would change completely. You can see it happening already. Players crossing from just inside the area where they havent got a hope of finding a man.

Then defenders would have to adapt,if what you say is right then more penalties equals more goals equals more entertainment.
I’d rather see a 2-2 draw with four pens than a 0-0.

If you are of the belief that more penalties equals more entertainment then we have to disagree. Thats not the game i was brought up on and enjoyed playing and watching. I would rather watch a nil nil draw than a game where the main objective is to win a penalty because its easier to score that way than to actually try and get the ball in the back of the net the normal way. Penalties should be the rare exeption not the norm as they seem to be these days.

Yes I have to agree with you that we disagree on entertainment.

Fair enough we are all different. But for me entertainment is about seeing a volley scream into the net, a goal line clearance, a winger beat his man etc. How many penalties make goal of the month.? So many games - and debate- seem to revolve around penalties these days.
