Past protests | Charlton fans have vented their anger towards Duchatelet before

Sunday 26th August 2018

Charlton's match against Fleetwood was held up on Saturday after protesting fans threw bags of crisps on to the pitch at The Valley.

A number of Charlton fans have repeatedly expressed their dissatisfaction with the running of the club by Belgian owner Roland Duchatelet, and have previously hurled items including plastic pigs from the stands.

On Saturday, the referee had to halt play in the first minute of the League One match, with Charlton's Twitter page announcing: "Play is stopped at The Valley as bags of crisps are cleared from the pitch."

A group of fans called the Coalition Against Roland Duchatelet (CARD) was behind the protest, which was inspired by our Evening Standard report that a Charlton employee needing to seek permission to eat crisps at their desk, owing to cutbacks on the use of cleaners.

It was also claimed this week that Charlton staff were being denied bonuses to which they believe they were entitled.

The CARD group had warned ahead of the game they would take another stand against Duchatelet, with a Twitter announcement on Friday saying: "It's *crunch time* at The Valley tomorrow! And we're planning bags of trouble for Roland Duchatelet..."

The match was just seconds old when bags of crisps began to be hurled from the stands, requiring a clean-up operation.

The teams went on to play out a goalless draw, with former Premier League side Charlton now sitting 14th in the third tier.
