How Cardiff City could line up against Norwich City

By Ian Mitchelmore

Monday 27th August 2018

Neil Warnock revealed he picked his Cardiff City side to face Norwich City in the Carabao Cup before the Bluebirds' Premier League clash with Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium.

The Bluebirds collected their second point of the season with a 0-0 draw against the Terriers in West Yorkshire but are yet to score a goal so far in the 2018/19 Premier League campaign.

They will hope their fortunes change when they welcome Championship side Norwich to Cardiff City Stadium in the second round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

And Warnock revealed after Cardiff's stalemate with his former club that he has already selected his team to face the Canaries and promised that he will make wholesale changes from the side that started against the Terriers.

"I picked the team for Tuesday on Friday," said the Cardiff boss.

"When I put it up on the board I thought 'bloody hell!'.

"When I came to the club I'd have settled for that team in the Championship. It's not bad the squad we've got. We've done that over 18 months.

"Everybody will get a chance that hasn't played today (against Huddersfield). And then we'll have to fill in with one or two that have been in the squad to make the numbers.

"It's a good game for us. I need to look at one or two things and that'll be a good opportunity for me."

So which players are set to get the nod against Daniel Farke's side?

We took a closer look.

The men in contention to start

Neil Etheridge has fully justified his position as the club's first choice goalkeeper having kept clean sheets in two of the Bluebirds' three Premier League games so far as well as saving penalties against Bournemouth and Newcastle United.

It's meant summer signing Alex Smithies has had to settle for a place on the bench, but the former Queens Park Rangers man is set to make his competitive bow for the Bluebirds against Norwich, with Brian Murphy most likely to be named among the substitutes.

And there's set to be big changes in the back line too.

Smithies' fellow summer recruit Greg Cunningham should get the nod on the left, with Joe Bennett set to be rested while Matthew Connolly, Lee Peltier and Jazz Richards are all in the mix to start, although captain Sean Morrison could well remain in the starting XI to give the Bluebirds some continuity in defence.

Further up the pitch, Loic Damour is in line to get his first minutes of the season while Callum Paterson could well get the nod given that he's started the last two games on the bench, although he did play the majority of the 0-0 draw with Huddersfield due to the injury suffered by Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

Junior Hoilett is unlikely to return to action until after the international break, and it means Kadeem Harris could get the chance to shine in front of the Cardiff faithful on Tuesday night.

Don't be too surprised if Josh Murphy takes to the field from the outset given the injuries to Hoilett and Mendez-Laing, while Warnock did make it clear that he will have to include some players who have been involved in the three games so far this season in the squad for the visit of the Carrow Road outfit.

And as for the forwards, Bobby Reid and Danny Ward will be vying for starts having made cameos in the draw against Huddersfield while Gary Madine will also be desperate to prove his worth as he bids to score his first competitive goal for the Bluebirds since his January move to South Wales from Bolton.

How the Bluebirds could line up

Here's a closer look at the ways Cardiff could line up in their cup clash with the Canaries.

4-1-3-2

Smithies; Peltier/Richards, Morrison, Connolly, Cunningham; Damour; Paterson, Reid, Harris; Ward, Madine.

4-2-3-1

Smithies; Peltier/Richards, Morrison, Connolly, Cunningham; Damour, Paterson; Murphy, Reid, Harris; Ward.

4-4-2/4-2-2-2

Smithies; Peltier/Richards, Morrison, Connolly, Cunningham; Damour, Paterson; Reid, Harris; Ward, Madine.

Given our lack of wingers who are fit there's no way Warnock will risk Murphy. I wonder if Cunningham could play centre back and Jazz left back? Hope people turn up for a change......I'd love a good run in the Carabao for once.

TEAM NEWS: Changes afoot for Norwich City

Monday 27th August 2018

Daniel Farke is weighing up wholesale changes for Norwich City’s League Cup trip to Cardiff City.

Daniel Farke faces a league and cup double header this week Picture: Paul Chesterton/Focus Images LtdDaniel Farke faces a league and cup double header this week.

Farke admitted the planning is already underway for the Championship derby trip to Ipswich Town this coming weekend but he is in no mood to write-off his squad’s chances against the Premier League Bluebirds on Tuesday.

The head coach reported no fresh injury concerns from the 3-0 Championship defeat to Leeds as he looks to shuffle his pack.

“No fresh injuries,” he said. “But a third game in six days means we make changes. For several lads, a lot of load. We’ll make a late decision who travels and then who plays. Timm Klose missed not one minute so far on the pitch. Also for Temmu Pukki and Jordan Rhodes a lot of load and the likes of Grant Hanley, Ivo Pinto, Alex Tettey missed most of pre-season.

“For that, we want to be there with a strong team and a chance to go to the third round. I like this cup competition a lot and we will try everything but it is also important to be start.

“Alex Tettey will travel with us. It was more like after Preston two games in four days would be tough. We have to remember his age and the knee issues he has had. But to give him another game off before Ipswich would be too long. It was good for him to be able to recreate at the weekend but he is back in a good shape.”

Mario Vrancic will not be risked as he steps up his return from a pelvic problem.

Michael McGovern will start and Farke plans to give some of his young charges an outing.

“Not as a gift,” he said. “I wouldn’t go into such a game without the thought we could be competitive. Maybe last season we made three or four changes for the cup but now we have more depth in the squad. I am pretty pleased with Ben Godfrey and it is almost ridiculous Christoph Zimmermann has not had more minutes. They are both in a good shape.

If viewing our live debate on a phone or tablet please make sure your browser and operating system are updated to the latest versions

“I am totally pleased with Todd Cantwell and they all have chances to be involved at Cardiff.”

Farke is well aware there is a massive clash at Portman Road on the horizon.

“The Ipswich game is already a bit in our head. It is a special game,” he said. “These two are the most important for us during the whole season and our supporters. Right now, we are in this Saturday, Tuesday rhythm and if our cup game was Wednesday and Ipswich was Saturday my cup starting line up would be about the Ipswich game.

“But there are enough days to recover so we can go strong at Cardiff.

“For someone like Alex Tettey, too much rest is not good. A positive, successful game at Cardiff can actually help us. We know this is not a final at Wembley, it is the second round of the League Cup but we want to use our chance.”

Kenny McLean is definitely ruled out until after the international break with ankle ligament damage.

Matt Jarvis is a longer term absentees. Russell Martin and Nelson Oliveira remain out of favour, ahead of Friday’s transfer deadline.

Cardiff manager Neil Warnock will ring the changes for the Carabao Cup visit of Norwich.

Goalkeeper Alex Smithies and defender Greg Cunningham are expected to make debuts following their summer arrivals. Lee Peltier, Jazz Richards, Loic Damour and Gary Madine are among those expected to get game-time as Warnock rotates heavily with Sunday's Premier League game against Arsenal in mind.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing was injured in a collision with Huddersfield goalkeeper Ben Hamer on Saturday and he will sit out the second-round tie alongside Junior Hoilett (groin) and Aron Gunnarsson (knee).

I have a feeling that this will be one of those games where fans will wish they were anywhere bar the CCS. I think Norwich will win a scrappy game 2-1.

Daniel Farke: Cardiff will provide a difficult and physical test

BBC

Daniel Farke is expecting a difficult and physical test when his Norwich City team take on Cardiff City in Round Two of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.

City gained no points from their two matches with the Bluebirds last season and Farke is expecting a tough challenge when the two sides, now in different leagues, meet once again.

DANIEL FARKE:

"They [Cardiff] always play in the same style, lots of intensity and aggressiveness," said the City boss.

"To be successful in this style, he needs recreated players on the pitch. They haven't conceded any goals in their last two games.

"I would prefer to play their last starting line-up because they lost a lot of energy.

"But he has many options. Bobby Reid was on the bench for them and he was brilliant in the Championship last year.

"It will be difficult and physical."

"We will be fielding a lot of our other squad players"

Five days after City play Cardiff comes the small matter of the first East Anglian derby of the season at Portman Road and Farke admits that match is already part of his thinking.

"The Ipswich game is already in our head. It's a special game for our supporters. If the cup game was on Wednesday and Ipswich was on Saturday, I would choose a starting line-up with that in mind.

"There are enough days to recover so we can go strong in tomorrow's game. Too much rest can sometimes not be good."

Re: MATCH THREAD “ CARDIFF CITY v NORWICH CITY “ MATCH THREA

Tue Aug 28, 2018 6:28 pm

Cardiff City's Carabao Cup campaign begins tonight as they host Championship side Norwich City in the second round of this season's competition.

Cardiff won both of their Championship matches against Norwich in the 2017-18 season, having won just two of their previous 11 games against the Canaries (all in league competition).

Norwich eliminated Cardiff from the League Cup in their only previous tie in the competition in the second round in 1983-84 – after a goalless first leg, the Canaries won 3-0 at Carrow Road in the second leg with a hat-trick from Mick Channon.

Norwich have won their last six League Cup second round matches, while Cardiff haven’t reached the third round since 2014-15.

Cardiff winger Junior Hoilett has scored four goals in his last six matches against Norwich in all competitions.

This is Cardiff manager Neil Warnock’s 13th consecutive home League Cup match, winning six and losing six of the previous 12.

His last cup match against Norwich was in the FA Cup in February 1992, with his Notts County side losing 3-0.

Looks like Richards is playing virtually as a genuine right winger, with Kadeem Harris on the other side.

That means Bobby Reid is tucking in behind Gary Madine to make it a 4-4-2 of sorts, more a 4-4-1-1. Cardiff have enjoyed most of the ball in these first four minutes, much of it coming through Reid.

Most important thing tonight is no injuries or suspensions.
A goal or two for Zahore off the bench for confidence would be nice.

Not really bothered if we win or lose this game i would rather concentrate on the league and have a go at the FA cup.
