What’s wrong with being “Plastic?!”

Fri Aug 24, 2018 10:29 am

Many people on this board criticise people for being “plastic.” Can someone please explain what is wrong with wanting to go to see attractive games but not wanting to go to see less interesting ones ? If someone doesn’t go to the cinema all year but then goes to see the latest Bond film, they aren’t criticised for being “plastic” cinema goers !

There is nothing wrong with that.

The issue is when people who come scrounging for tickets for these games and then moan when they cannot get them.

 are you seriously comparing supporting your football club to going to the cinema?
If you support a team then you should go to support ‘your’ team regardless of who you’re playing against. Some choose to go to watch Cardiff only when they play the likes of the so called top 6, that’s why you’re labelled as plastic. I and many other Ccfc supporters have supported Cardiff city for many many years through thick and thin and whatever division we were in. Judging by your question, I guess you are very young or have just recently supported Cardiff city.

It's a well trodden path, fella and the honest answer (as in a lot of 'grouping' in football and the wider world) is that no one really has the answer because it's all open to interpretation ;)

In football's case, I just think some 'regular' fans have an issue with (shall we call them for this purpose) the 'floaters' who pick and choose the games they attend; often according to who the opposition are rather than to watch the City themselves

Right or wrong? Again, who knows? But I think your cinema analogy has a point; the difference being I doubt many claim to 'support' their local cinema in the way many 'support' their football (or any other sport) club and/or team

Personally, I have to admit there was a time when I used the word 'plastic' but realised I was indeed 'grouping' people whose story I didn't actually know, so I stopped

A bigger issue for me, is the rise of the negativos and out and out trolls...

If people support Cardiff City FC, then get behind them and support; if not, just go away! :thumbright: :ayatollah:

I tend to agree here.

I have no problem with people pick and choosing games. I have a season ticket if I didn't and could only go to certain amount of games for whatever reason then no doubt I would pick the bigger games as well.

I'm a 'Plastic' and proud of it!!!
I have supported City all my life, went to every home game as a kid up until I moved away when I was 21. Now I only go to one or two games a year when I am down in Cardiff. However, I don't pick games because they are against the top 6 just when I happen to be there. Tbh I probably go for games against lower teams so I can guarentee getting a ticket.

My point is some people may go to a couple of games a year but we are still fans! Admittedly not as committed as some but we still want the best for the club.

As I said, Plastic and proud to support the Bluebirds :bluebird:

To be honest I think the term plastic is mainly used by fans who want to feel superior over other fans just because they choose to spent a lot of their time following the city

i think originally people used to use the term for your Man U/ Liverpool types that have no intention of ever watching a live game but whose relatives will tell you that they are fanatics.....with the term getting broader as the years go by...agree that on here its mostly used by people that see themselves as superfans { oddly enough its pretty clear by some of these peoples other posts that they themselves were not watching us in the dark days }

Don't worry Plastic we have about 14,000 of them. With all of the excuses under the sun for not going to games. Our crowds next season will drop from 30,000 down to 16,000 if we are relegated.

Nah that will be the season after because lots of people will renew hoping for promotion come on you f*cking plastic if you had been before you’d know this

Plastics are people with a life that don’t hide behind having nothing but their club and angrily challenge those that do. Following Cardiff week in week out means you a legend like innit.

Not at all. If people have more important things to do then fair enough but if you purposely choose to watch us against the likes of Man City and Liverpool but decide to stay home when we’re playing bournemouth then that makes you a plastic simple as. People make all the excuses under the sun when it comes to the lesser teams but it’s a sell out against the big teams, it’s not rocket science.

I view them as the glory hunting floaters that only really want to go to FA Cup Finals, League Cup Finals, when we are in the top two of the Championship or in the Premiership.

Glory hunters that will drop Cardiff for lower level games.

There are plenty of them around this season and you will see more and more, can you get me a ticket blah blah

Re: What’s wrong with being “Plastic?!”

I’m actually less bothered by plastics because each and every one could be inspired to be our next die hard and it just took the premier league to inspire them in. We all have to start somewhere. 6 years or so ago I would attend the odd game but mostly I was a committed egg chaser fan. I got a gold membership when we were last In the premier league. Caught a few games. But decided to commit to a season ticket when we got relegated and haven’t looked back. I have totally swapped allegiances from rugby and rarely watch any now and watch every home game and do my best to stream away games. If I can’t see it I’m glued to the app for the commentary.
Nothing wrong with being plastic if we encourage them to become more than that.

What’s annoying to me is the sheer number of cardiff/south east wales locals I saw on Facebook either at the game or commenting on social media as Arsenal fans. People from Cardiff. Sat in the away end in an Arsenal Shirt. The mind boggles and makes absolutely no sense to me. Give me a full house of plastics dressing in blue over them ta.

I'm in the same boat as you but it's not the distance but my job. As I work in a kitchen I work almost every Saturdays ansits hard to get them off. but I try to go to as many as I can in any league.

I have a load of mates who are plastics! I couldn't give away tickets last season but as soon as the fixture list was announced this year my phone didn't stop! Everyone of them who hadn't been to a game last season was told to find there own way of getting a ticket

However, my brother for example has started a new job working shifts and struggles to get to games these days. Last season he came to a few games throughout the season when time and money permitted. He made the extra effort for the Reading game and went to the game straight from a night shift.

Does this now make him a plastic for making the extra effort for the big game where he most likely wouldn't if it hadn't been so much riding on it?

Re: What’s wrong with being “Plastic?!”

We all have to start somewhere as a fan so if someone who goes infrequently takes their kid who is a Man City / Man U fan and they become hooked on the Bluebirds then surely that could be a good thing.

Also many fans may have to travel long distances which adds extra cost and lets face it, things are tight at the moment.
If I lived in Cardiff I would go every home match.

And of course it is more exciting seeing them play Premier sides. I paid £7.99 to watch the Arsenal match on Now TV on the weekend, I wouldn't have forked that out to watch them play Scunthorpe!

Just saying....

What's wrong with being Plastic. EVERYTHING.
Won't see your arse for dust if we get relegated. That is what a plastic is.
