' Harry Arter insists that points can come from the top Premier League sides '

The Independent

Monday 20th August 2018

Harry Arter has a convincing counter-argument to those who believe Cardiff City’s survival hopes will live or die on their ability to beat the likes of Newcastle.

The midfielder, a deadline day loan mover from Bournemouth, has plenty of experience in defying the odds and the doomsayers such as BBC radio pundit Chris Sutton who has predicted Neil Warnock’s side could threaten Derby County’s record low total of 11 points for a Premier League season.

Cardiff may have spurned an opportunity against a Newcastle side reduced to 10 men for almost the final half hour, but in the end they were hugely fortunate to earn a point when their keeper Neil Etheridge saved Kenedy’s feeble 95th minute penalty.

Yet Arter insists the points may come from the most unexpected places after his new side failed to capitalise on Isaac Hayden’s dismissal.

“You do single games out where there is more pressure to win games. But every game is an opportunity,” said Arter.

“I remember in our first season up with Bournemouth we were in a real spot of bother in the bottom three with games coming up against Chelsea and Manchester United. We had Chelsea away and Man United at home and we ended up getting six points out of those games, which some people had written off.

“Every game you go into you have a chance to upset people. Everyone is going to write Cardiff off this year and that’s up to them. I wouldn’t say it will motivate the lads more, because our aim is to stay in the Premier League whether there are people being positive or negative about us. Nothing from the outside is going to derail us.”

The other presumed wisdom about Cardiff is that Warnock’s promoted team must elbow, shove and chase their way to survival.

They were typically aggressive against Newcastle, but it would be inaccurate to label them long ball, even though their attacks are rapid and direct.

Arter and his fellow debutant, the Spaniard Victor Camarasa, have been drafted in to add some poise and craft to the hurly-burly, but the Ireland international insists there is more than one way for a Bluebird to soar above the relegation net.

“One thing I have learned with football is that there is no right or wrong way. So many teams have success doing different things that can be unique and brilliant.

“Of course, everyone wants to copy Manchester City and the way they play. But you have to understand they have some of the best players in the world to play that way. There are other ways to win football matches.

“Philosophy-wise, I don’t think there was anything silly. The ball didn’t go long. All the time we got passes in when we needed to. The manager encourages us to play. There is no negativity towards wanting to play football.”

For Newcastle, the lessons of a missed opportunity of their own are to find more belief from the outset, rather than wait until the chips are down.

They also require far more discipline from the infuriating Brazilian Kenedy who long before his missed penalty had hacked at Camarasa in a manner likely to invoke FA disciplinary action.

The 22-year-old would have been sent off had referee Craig Pawson seen the first-half assault, so a retrospective three-game ban is likely.

Kenedy, who will be unavailable for Newcastle’s next game anyway as they host his parent club Chelsea on Sunday, may be trying the patience of Rafa Benitez but so far the Magpies manager is choosing not to let it show.

Benitez said: “I think it’s a time for him to stay focused. He is quite good in training sessions. Sometimes there are things he can do and there are things he can’t. But we can all learn from today.

“We have had changes from last season and there is new competition for places. We have to get to the level we were at sometimes last season and everyone has to give everything.”

The Bournemouth experience fuelling Harry Arter as Cardiff City prepare for Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City tests

By Ian Mitchelmore

Monday 20th August 2018

Harry Arter believes his experience with Bournemouth during their debut Premier League campaign is proof that Cardiff City should not be daunted by their upcoming tough run of fixtures.

Neil Warnock's men have claimed just one point from their opening two fixtures of the season and face Arsenal, Chelsea and champions Man City after their away trip to Huddersfield Town this weekend.

Arter's parent club Bournemouth claimed just two wins from their opening 14 matches during the 2015/16 season before facing Chelsea and Manchester United back-to-back.

Eddie Howe's men were widely tipped to lose both matches, but they defeated Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge before beating Louis van Gaal's Manchester United 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium a week later.

And Republic of Ireland international Arter admits the Cherries' success in staying up in their first season in the Premier League is proof that Cardiff have nothing to fear when they take on the division's big guns.

"You do single out games where you put pressure on yourself to win those matches. This is what makes the Premier League the best league in the world," said Arter.

"Experience wise coming up with Bournemouth we were in a real spot of bother in our first season in the league.

"We had Chelsea and Manchester United and were in the bottom three at the time and ended up getting six points out of those games where people wrote us off. I feel every game you go into you have a chance to cause an upset.

"I feel everyone's going to write Cardiff off this year, and that's up to them.

"I won't say it'll galvanise us more because our aim is to stay in the league, whether people are being positive or negative about us. Nothing will de-rail us from the outside.

"But of course you look at certain fixtures and hope you pick up points from them."

Arter made his Bluebirds debut in the 0-0 draw with Newcastle at Cardiff City Stadium alongside fellow deadline day signing Victor Camarasa.

The pair both impressed as Warnock's side claimed their first point of the season in dramatic fashion.

And Arter heaped praise on his midfield partner following his display against the Magpies, adding that he hopes they can help Cardiff play an attractive brand of football.

"I always feel - especially for promoted sides - is always your most difficult," added the 28-year-old.

"The fashion that we got it in the end makes it feel even better. A point that ended up feeling like three points purely down to the circumstances.

“It was nice to get a full week’s training in before the game. It was such a big game, so the focus was primarily on that rather than any individuals.

"Victor and myself couldn’t get caught up in our debuts. Personally, I thought we thoroughly deserved to come away with the point today.

“I thought Victor was excellent. For a lad to come over from Spain and to have only been here for a week and play the way he did was excellent and hopefully we can complement each other more as we go forward and get to know each other and hopefully play some good football.

"It's such a tough league, there's no beating around the bush, our only aim is to stay up this year so hopefully a point will help us towards that.

"One thing I've learned is that there's no right or wrong way. Teams have success doing things differently. That's what makes football so unique and brilliant.

"Of course everyone wants to copy Man City but you've got to understand, they've got the best players in the world to do that.

"But there's more ways to win. Philosophy wise I don't think was anything silly from us. The ball went long and we got some passes in when we needed to. But the manager encourages us to play."

What can you say?I find this thread very refreshing, this is the sort of mental attitude that could infect ideally the whole stadium .Im sure Harry will give great imputus to an already buzzing dressing room hes had experience of being where we are, hope some of the more negative fans take on this positivity and help make our stadium a fortress.

We already of an excellent captain in Morrisson, but agree that Arter is clearly of that calibre and will be invaluable as an extra 'leader' in the team
