Cardiff City youngster Mark Harris joins Newport County on loan
By Callum Ellis

Cardiff City forward Mark Harris has joined League Two side Newport County on loan until January.

Harris made his senior debut for Cardiff during their FA Cup defeat against Fulham in January 2017, but first team minutes have been hard to come by for the youngster.

He went on to make two more appearances during the 2016-17 campaign, but failed to feature once under Warnock last season.

Harris spent last season with the Bluebirds’ under-23 side, and has also represented Wales at under-17, under-19, under-20 and under-21 level.

The youngster will link up with the Exiles until January, and becomes Mike Flynn’s ninth addition of the summer window.

“I’m obviously delighted to sign for Newport County,” Harris told iFollow Exiles.

“I like to create goals, score them as well so hopefully I can do that this season. I don’t mind playing upfront in a two, my main strength I would say is running in behind and getting at defenders.

“I just needed to get out and play some games, I feel like Newport will be a club where I can develop and get a lot of games under my belt.

“It will be a club where I can get experience, so I feel that this club brings a great opportunity for me.”

He added: “The gaffer has been very helpful, he’s rang me a couple of times and we’ve been on the phone and I’ve liked the sound of everything he’s said to me. I just can’t wait now for the first game Saturday.”

Newport boss Flynn said: “Mark is a young, exciting player. He’s a good finisher, makes intelligent runs, and is very quick.

“He also shows the hunger and appetite that I want at this football club. He’s highly thought of by Neil Warnock and Craig Bellamy at Cardiff City and I’m delighted to have got him in.”

Good move, more of our youngsters should go out to Newport to toughen them up playing against men, under 23’s a waste of time?

If we isolate the success rate of this system producing young players ready to challenge for first team action. Totally flawed!

Good move for him hope he does well.

I don’t think the U23’s are a waste of time. But the way our U23’s was being run was making it a waste of time.

Good luck to you Mark now go show them what your capable of then come back a better player.

As for under23 teams they wont learn playing against there same age group.
The lads need to train with senior squad players and learn from them every day in training, if good enough they will get into team.
More differcult now we are in top league with squads of 25 but at least they get a chance to learn from top players.
In the lower leagues young players were pushed through to first team as they were cheaper option,it was not as important if we lost at that level .
Since we got to championship level not many have broken into first team as more experienced players were prefered. :bluebird:

I saw Harris play for the U-23's a number of times last year. The U-23's is a good competition but IMO Harris was at least a couple of levels above that standard and needed to challenge himself at a higher level.

Providing he gets playing time @ Newport it will be an excellent learning curve for him.
