Wealdstone defeat 'a big learning curve' for youngsters

02/08/18

Cardiff City under-23s boss Jarred Harvey admitted he was disappointed with his side’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of Wealdstone yesterday, but says there’s more to come from his young team.

JARRED HARVEY

“It was a cup final for Wealdstone even though it’s pre-season. They were bang up for it and had a point to prove.
“We knew it was going to be a tough game and I thought the boys did well in parts. They aren’t used to these kinds of teams so that’s the idea behind playing them.
“We’ve faced quite strong sides throughout pre-season and all the players have done really well. We’re hopeful to get everybody back fit in the next week or two and then we go again.
“The aim for us is the same as every year - develop players to get near the first team. If we win games along the way then great. We’ll be judged on developing players for this football club rather than winning games. That’s our job.”

Wealdstone are a very good amateur team you know . I think both Vinnie Jones and Stuart Pearce started there and loads of lesser known but good professionals too.
They've always got fantastic young talent so I don't think anyone should feel bad about that result or under estimate them again.

Did it kick off with the Wealdstone Raider?

Where does he get the " we have faced quite strong sides through the pre season" from. Basically we have face a bunch of Cornish pasties from the Carrot Cruncher league division five. Wealdstone are hardly Real Madrid either.

Mate, it's the under 23s !!!

They're learning their trade that's all , and you might expect the opposition to be chosen to challenge but not smash their confidence.
As I said above , Wealdstone often field great sides for a tiny club and you'll find all sorts of former internationals hanging round the place socially and chucking in advice and tips . In the end though, such matches are of no account and nor are pre season friendlies. They're just like sparring sessions for boxers, that's all.
