" Cardiff City's forgotten man "

Monday 30th July 2018

The Daily Mail have done a list of Premier League forgotten men - with Anthony Pilkington being named as Cardiff City’ representative.

The Irishman has featured for the Under-23s this summer - scoring one and assisting another in their 3-0 win over Hereford FC at Edgar Street on Saturday.

Neil Warnock does seem willing to let Pilkington leave - even if it is only on loan this summer.

Here’s what the Mail had to say about him.

It was Pilkington that Cardiff turned to following relegation from the Premier League in 2014.

The 30-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season and with the window closing on August 9, Pilkington quickly needs to decide his next move having been told he is free to leave the Welsh club.
Boss Neil Warnock wants quality additions for their return to the top-flight and appears to feel Pilkington does not have the tools required to make enough of an impact.
Five managers in four years has shown Pilkington clearly has something about him, making over 75 appearances and scoring a total of 23 times.
More than played his part in the route to promotion but with additions such as Bobby Reid arriving this summer, Pilkington’s time in Wales looks up.

I like Pilks - a whole hearted 100% trier who has scored some great (and important) goals for us.

Loved that goal at Sheffield United which really gave us a boost towards the final promotion push.

And a goal ratio of almost 1 every 3 games is pretty impressive especially when you think that he was in and out of the team a fair bit and was initially signed as a winger!

I'm sure he would be decent back up in the Premier League and am rather surprised that there doesn't seem to be much interest in him from Championship clubs.

I agree he is a decent fella/player but suffers from the fact he doesn't seem to have a natural position.

An ideal substitute who can play in a number of positions and can score vital goals, I’d give him a place in our 25?

Top player who would play a lot more if he wasnt on big wages. Seems like he is resented at the club because they offered him big money!

Doesn't have the pace to play wide in our system and we need better upfront. Don't see how he makes the 25

Love Pilks and his contribution has been significant. Even following him on twitter you see what a total professional he is and how he is very encouraging to city youngsters. He has really enjoyed raising his family in cardiff and being a part of our success. I guess he is one of those players who will always have some affinity with Cardiff.

His 'versatility' is a strength and a problem for him.

Not quick enough to play on the wing, not an out and out striker and not quite enough guile for a number 10 but his technical ability and workrate is top notch.

In an unforgiving league I would be surprised if there was a spot for him in the 25

I wonder if Paterson may struggle from the same problem this season, although Callum does have youth on his side and time to tie down a position.

I don't think there is room for too many versatile players and Paterson will obviously get the nod over Pilks.

Surprised there are not a queue of championship teams lining up for him.

Football can be harsh.

agree totally - plenty of footballers would throw their toys out of the pram in his situation but he's been professional and hard working whenever called upon.

in the championship i think his wages were the problem in moving him on. in the premier league, he doesnt cut the mustard.

this one will go to the wire with championship clubs looking to pick him up cheaply, or on a loan deal paying a low % of his salary.

paterson doesnt have pace, but he is a nuisance, and makes things happen. he will easily make the step up to the premier league.
