Do we have a foreign scouting system?

Thu Jul 26, 2018 3:29 pm

Just wondering really if we actually have in place any sort of scouting system in Europe and beyond at the moment?

It seems almost as if there has been a conscious decision during NW's time to recruit mainly home grown or British players and by any reckoning he has been extremely successful but we rarely seem to be (genuinely) linked with any players from foreign teams be they experienced players or up and coming youngsters with plenty of talent.

Of course it's always a gamble with any player as to whether they fit it and with foreign players there can be the culture and language difficulties to overcome as well, but I would like to think that we have a scouting network throughout Europe and beyond looking for players who can maybe add something different to what we have at the moment.

Damour is really the only player I can think of who would have been scouted from a foreign team during the Warnock era and even Grujic came from Liverpool.

This is not meant to be critical in any way just a question really as to whether or not we are actively looking abroad to check on players or whether our targets are limited to British players or foreign players who play in Britain.

It’s been said that we aren’t looking abroad for players from abroad we are looking for players that fit into the group of players that we have.

Last time we signed a player from almost every corner of the globe and it got us nowhere.

I’m sure the club know what there doing don’t worry.

I understand what you're saying but surely there's no reason why players from abroad wouldn't fit into the group of players that we have? Players can fit in or be disruptive no matter where they come from.

I just wonder if we should be casting the net a little wider than we currently seem to be doing, unless of course we do actually have a network in place abroad which has not been able to unearth any suitable talent :o

I know they are extreme examples but look what happened to Leicester when they were able to identify Kante and Mahrez, neither of whom cost vast sums of money to buy.

What I can’t understand is why we can’t better Swansea’s scouting or signings. To be fair they signed some class from abroad over the years, surely cardiff city would be more attractive to potential players, how can’t we match them?

If you look at Warnocks History he is very much like Big Sam and a Percentages Manager in the way he sets teams up to play and the players he signs. So with Scouting there is less risk in signing a top end championship player who is fluent in the language (as fitting in with the squad is very important to him) and is used to the pace and culture of the league system. It is always a huge risk signing a talented foreigner who has shown promise in the French league or similar. Could end up like Chelsea with Bakayoko. Looked brilliant at Monaco in the league and Europe then just couldn't settle and get used to the pace in England.
Obviously not everyones way of doing it but who is to say Seri is going to settle at Fulham and if not its a massively expensive flop.
Look at Brighton with Locadia who they signed for £14 mill last season. Been useless, can't settle and now they are struggling to sell him for anywhere near that fee. If Reid Flops teams know what they get from him in the Championship and with the money floating around there we would easily get our money back.

Think it's a case of most foreign players not fitting NW philosophy so why waste time looking abroad if not really going to buy anyone? Some clubs have opposite view and put out 11 foreigners simple truth is every manager have their own style and our next manager could be foreign orientated so reversing the trend.....

They had managers who were used to foreign markets buy if you look at who they signed all went after 2yrs or less their record signing hardly played a game for them was total waste of effort and money .

They managed 7 seasons so obviously down something right. Would you call Brendan Rogers foreign? British id say.

Said managers used foreign markets not were foreign managers? :laughing6: yes managed 7 seasons but couldn't keep their imports and their record signing was foreign and they didn't play him after couple games he's out on loan now or sold? Just saying foreign policy is not always best and NW prefers to use British players mostly whilst others like swans preferred signing foreign players.

I don’t think we have ever bought effectively from abroad.

Gary Medel the only one I can think of.

We do have two teams linked to us in Europe so scouting might come from those areas. As someone stated earlier, Warnock recognizes the importance of adressing room and has sought to bring in players that will compliment existing team. Only foreign player I’d look at is that Sidy Sarr - a tall DM (which we are in grave need of)

He needs to find another Robert Earnshaw. City screaming out for a goalscorer this season. Poacher in the box.

I loved Earnie I really did but he didn’t do a lot aside from scoring. That sounds weird to say but I’m not sure he’s a Warnock player for that reason.
