Aron Gunnarson is no longer a Cardiff City player

Mon Jul 02, 2018 6:51 am

Aron Gunnarsson is technically no longer a Cardiff City player, having seen his contract at the club expire over the weekend.

Talks are believed to be ongoing over a new deal, and fans will hope there will be some positive news soon.

Gunnarsson is now a free agent.

No great loss, too slow for the premiership

It's all a bit odd; I would have thought he'd have something sorted out with us or another club by now...

Effectively out of work and that simply doesn't make sense

None of us can be sure of the supposed 'issue' at this time (it's all conjecture) but something is up!

Sven I wonder if it's anything to do with being guaranteed playing time ?

I like Gunnarson, but looking at it objectively if we were looking at signing an out of contract player to bring our midfield up to Premier League standard would Gunnarson be on our list?

course he would. who else is out there on a free around the same price?

we have absolutely nothing in midfield at the moment so need more than gunners obviously, but hes easily good enough for our squad.

He obviously wants too much money or he would be here, Warnock likes him and has been in discussions with him and his agent for months.

A good World cup and maybe he could have got a deal elsewhere, maybe he is in discussion with a few clubs right now that are prepared to pay what he wants, no big loss anyway he's in the decline and picking up injuries !!!

He would be a good squad player for someone like Stoke or Boro.

If we've offered him a deal I can't see him turning it down. This will be his last chance to play in the best league in the world.

Really 50/50 with keeping him or letting him go I was like this with Whitts but it was 100% the right decision for him to go and he was offered a new contract as well
I would say only replace gunner if we have better options at a decent price

It all comes down to opinion but mine is the same as yours time to take a different direction.

Whitts is a very good comparison. One year on would anyone really suggest that letting him go wasn't the correct decision?

the answer is obviously yes.
we have offered him a deal..he is out of contract and does play in midfield.
so id assume not only on the list but quite high on this list.

To much messing around for my liking he's a good replacement in the premier but not good enough week in week out

I'm not sure but it sure is baffling and it clearly started some time ago. Neil Warnock didn't make his "doesn't want to play in the Championship" statement for no reason. He was certainly making a point of some kind ;)

As I've said before, I'm pretty ambiguous on Gunnar; he could be a good squad player this coming season but (transfer fee apart) there are others out there who can do his job and would jump at the chance of signing for a Premier League team

I tend to agree with Tony blue Williams and Nubbsy's sentiments above  :ayatollah:

Dogfound, I think you've misunderstood mate. Maybe I have!?

I think he meant if Gunnar had never played for Cardiff and he was available on a free, Would we still be looking at signing him?

Could be wrong but that's how I read it :thumbright:

Do you trust warnock to use him as a squad player?
Personally I think if he signs (which I think he will) then he will be played every game no matter what, which is a huge concern to me.

i dont get the never played for Cardiff bit tbh.....at the end of player contracts they become free agents some you offer contracts to { the ones the club have a use for }..others they dont { Gregg Halford }
i dont see much odd about him not yet having signed either Junior only signed a few days ago and was not at a world cup plus there are literally thousands of out of contract players this time of year.
i honestly dont think Warnock would have a contract offer on the table if he thought he could sign one of the numerous free agents who he deems both better and within same price bracket { wages }.
the contract is there because Warnock wants him here..as hard as that is to take by some..it is being objective

you really need to start trusting him mate...
this notion that he is or has picked teams for any other reason than to win games is crazy

He was found out last time in the Prem. - the pace of the game passed him by.

perhaps with different tactics this time, he will be an effective player, as in most past years.

I trust him up to a point, but im sensible enough to know like most managers he has flaws and favourite players. I think the way he used Gunner at the end of the last season was a issue and of course he has never proven himself in the premiership despite a long career. Now is his chance and I really hope he does it but I have concerns if he thinks Gunner is the answer in the premiership next season, all ifs and buts at this stage though.

But it’s not obvious though is it ?

If we’ve offered him a contract that isn’t at the level he expects in the Prem it would suggest he’s just going to be a back up and clearly not “high on the list” !

I just can’t see why people think he will make it in the Prem this time. He couldn’t cope with the pace 5 years ago and won’t this time around either.

I would take him as a squad player but if he’s first choice CM then I would worry.

Yes that's what I meant. If he wasn't a Cardiff player already I don't think we he would be high on the list.
