Areas we need to strengthen

Sat Jun 30, 2018 11:58 am

I’m absolutely buzzing with the new sigings warnock’s made, although we should expect to try to stay up, it makes sense to take the Burnley-type route to gaining long term Premier League status by building a good squad of players who aren’t going to jump ship if we are relegated.

Having said that, i feel that we still need to strengthen in a few areas.

Firstly, we desperately need a right back, Peltier can do a job but he offers nothing going forward and could be shown up by better wingers. Jazz is okay but massively injury prone. Someone like Danny Simpson or even Sam Byram could be good options.

Secondly, we need another centre midfielder such as Arslan or McCarthur who we’ve been linked with. Just someone with some experience of playing at a higher level who can do a lot of different things on and off the ball. Atm, with Gunnar being injury prone and Ralls/ Paterson not prem proven i feel like we need at least one solid cm.

Thirdly, a new striker is vital, with Bobby Reid likely being our new CAM, we should look at siging someone who has scored goals in the prem e.g. Abel Hernandez. Zohore isn’t good enough judging by his finishing last season. Lets not talk about Madine. Ideally I’d love Charlie Austin but I’d imagine he’s now a key part of Southampton’s squad under hughes. Danny Ings could be a real statement of intent but the finances likely rule us out of contention.

Lastly and perhaps most controversially, i feel that we need a new centre back. Morrison is undoubtedly good enough and will be first choice, i can even see him following Tarkowski in earing an England cap if he continues his form. But Sol Bamba fills me with dread, whilst I’m still not certain about Manga. Bamba showed last year how good he can be but i feel that the heart attack moment he guarantees each game will cost us in the prem against better teams. He’s too rash on the ball and off it as well. Warnock did his best to tame him but he still caused havock occasionally. Great defender but not a great all rounder. Would’ve gone in for someone like Flint but perhaps we could look at some others like Chester who we could get for value with Villa’s financial crisis.

In an ideal world, these are the areas I’d strengthen but either way, i look forward to having a go next year and if we do go down, we’re already better prepared than last time. These early sigings could be key.

I don't disagree with any of that, I do think we need at least 2 CMs but the rest I agree with. If the budget allowed I would also get another CB but I don't think it will stretch that far.

I would spend a bit on both on a loan fee could be the difference of staying up or not

And if we stay up wez it’s worth another £100mill, so worth a decent outlay imo.
Plus getting promoted we are starting from scratch having to build a side compared to say Bournemouth, so initial outlay is going to be substantial.
