MY THOUGHTS: IS VAR THE FUTURE IN FOOTBALL?

Fri Jun 29, 2018 3:37 pm

VAR has made itself known in the World Cup this year and not without any controversy too.

But I think that VAR is essential and incredible because it adds to the tension in the football game, some fans get frustrated if there team is cheated or the referee gets the decision wrong because there view on the tackle from the naked eye is not clear enough. I think VAR helps the referees and I think with a few tweaks to VAR and another certain rule then it wouold be a match made in heaven.

We still get players like Pepe arguing with the referees and with his team mates backing him up it seemed like the referee is outnumbered but I think the new rule should be that who ever argues with the referee for a very long time then the referee should send him off. And then the players will back off.

Now the VAR tweak I would make is that whenever the referee goes to the side of the pitch there should be a timer on how long the decision takes and add it onto the match time and then we get the true end to the game instead of referees deciding to leave it for a minute or 2.

But if VAR and the football rules gets these tweaks everyone is happy. and then maybe less diving too.

I think it’s worked well in the WC so far.
There’s been a couple of odd decisions but if they can iron those out it’ll be in the prem next season.

Is still goes to the ref, if you poor ref VAR wont help.
VAR isn't the issue for me.

It works great in Icehockey.

2 things firstly its upto var to draw attention to incidents so its how long it takes to decide if ref needs to look at it and then its up to ref if needs to look at monitor pitchside! Secondly how can ref make an informed decision if hes say got a minute to decide whether to award pen or not? Trouble is fifa decreed that var look at every incident in area thats not what var was brought in for it was for correcting obvious mistakes but instead its basically saying ref as made a mistake when he hasn't given pen even though only around 3 out of 24 pens have been obvious errors rest have been incidents ref as seen but decided no pen just like without var, now var is making refs question his decision and 99.8% of time he reverses his decision based on slow motion and 26 different angles used by var and not his own judgement . :old:

I agree, it’s the refs interpretation of an incident, you’ve seen them debating in the studio and they all have different opinions, was it a penalty/wasn’t it, so this is the biggest stumbling bloc for me.

Im not a fan of it. It takes the natural pace of the game away and also takes away the debate element of the game.

I'd be more in favor of a challenge rule, where each team has 2 challenges per game.

Its a stumbling block wont get over unless they say var makes the decisions? Because as seen with the 2 handballs one ref got it totally wrong because var told him to look at it and he was influenced by var even though he originally said accidental which was correct call according to laws of game but he gave a pen based on seeing var!

All I can say to that is refs need to be up to speed on the laws of the game unless it won’t work.

Having said that it’s still down to interpretation so I’m 50/50 on this.

Don't like it, don't want it and eventually it will ruin the game for me.

Only laws need to be implemented by refs is handball and what is a foul as thats all var is supposed to rule on? If refs cannot do that theres no hope for football! And as seen with the hanball situation var doesnt know the rules either or wouldn't have ref review them.

I feel the same to be honest.

There will end up being no end to it, where do you draw the line, referees are going to end up nervous wrecks, free kicks in the wrong placemail, foul throws, everything is going to end up being reviewed and it will f**k the game

Its unavoidable as even now var is over stepping its original purpose! As I've said will go way of tmo in rugby and will look at things in build up to goal as there's been contentious issues previously in that area.
