Josh Windass choosing Rangers stay would be big statement from Gers

HITC

Thursday 28th June 2018

Glasgow Rangers midfielder Josh Windass could reportedly be on the verge of leaving Ibrox this summer to join Premier League Club Cardiff City.

According to a report from the Daily Express (28/06; page 55), Rangers could be powerless to prevent Josh Windass leaving Ibrox this summer with Cardiff planning to trigger the Gers star's £3 million release clause.

Windass has never quite been able to unite the Rangers fanbase during his time with the Light Blues, but there is no doubt that when he is at his best, he is a fantastic player and he proved that by scoring 18 goals in all competitions last season.

Josh Windass of Rangers scores his sides first goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Stadium on March 11, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The Daily Express reports that he has caught the Bluebirds' eye and Neil Warnock is hoping to sign the Rangers star ahead of their Premier League return - and given that his release clause is set to be triggered, it appears that the Gers hierarchy can only do so much to prevent Windass from leaving.

But Windass could snub a move, and if the 24-year-old does ultimately stay put, it would arguably be one of the biggest statements that Rangers could possibly make this summer.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

With Windass seemingly not one of the most popular members of the squad amongst the fans and with a move to England's top flight on offer, the playmaker would perhaps not struggle to find a reason to move on.

But that is why if he ultimately decides to stay at Rangers, it would be a massive boost for Steven Gerrard and send a clear message out to the rest of the Scottish Premiership and potential transfer targets.

He does not need to stay if he does not wish to, so deciding to stick at Ibrox would suggest that he sees serious potential in the project that is being undertaken right now.

It may not be a universally popular decision amongst the supporters if he snubbed Cardiff, but all the fans would have to acknowledge that it would be a real statement regarding the club's direction if he did stay.

Josh Windass release clause at Rangers 'set to be triggered' by Cardiff City

Cardiff City set to meet Josh Windass

Daily Record

Friday 29th June 2018

Premier League new boys Cardiff City are set to test Rangers ’ resolve with a £3m bid which would trigger Josh Windass’ release clause, according to reports.

The Bluebirds are long-term admirers of the Ibrox forward and had been looking to land Windass for in a cut-price deal this summer.

But now they are prepared to meet the full valuation, according to the Express .

Rangers signed Windass from Accrington Stanley for a fee of around £200,000 two years ago.

Premier League new boys set to activate release clause of Rangers star

Ninety minutes

Friday 29th June 2018

Cardiff City are set to launch a bid for Rangers midfielder Josh Windass which will activate the release clause of the player, effectively giving the Glasgow outfit no say in his future.

The Premier League new boys have been busy in the transfer market this summer as they look to put a squad together that is capable of remaining in the top flight, and there have been a number of rumours over recent times regarding their interest in the former Accrington Stanley star.

Windass has never truly been universally popular among the Rangers fans, but he is said to be a key part of the plans under new boss Steven Gerrard, so losing him could be a real blow for the former Liverpool stalwart.

It is believed the two clubs have been in talks for a while over the future of the 24-year-old, with Cardiff boss Neil Warnock looking to get his man on the cheap, but in a bid to get a deal over the line as quickly as possible he is now ready to activate the £3 million release clause.

Windass bagged 18 goals in what was a decent season for him at Ibrox last term, and he can be expected to kick on under the guidance of Gerrard, but that opportunity could be taken away from him, unless he chooses to reject the Bluebirds and remain in Glasgow.

The goal scoring midfielder made the switch to Scotland under then boss Mark Warburton in 2016 and has improved all the time in his Gers career.

If he has played his final match for them then Rangers will at least be making a significant profit on him, although his former club Accrington could well be due part of the fee, should they have a negotiated a sell on clause when allowing him to leave Lancashire.

Am I the only one thinking this is just pure BS and him and his dad are trying their hardest to get a move Warnock said before the season finished he only wants players that can strengthen the team and the players he's signed have all been done pretty quickly if he was signed he would be about 5th choice winger so wouldn't really strengthen the squad and this story has gone on since more or less the start of the window seems to me their trying to create interest there hasn't actually been a bid like previously reported either

Is he actually a winger or more of a central midfield player. It makes a difference we have loads of wide midfield players and don't really need anyone else but another central midfielder would not go amiss.

not long after the original thread on here { which had nothing to do with the media } Warnock came out with the remark about the Scottish market....so maybe, maybe not

He’s been played wide and off the striker, shows flashes of brilliance then vanishes for 80 minutes. Boys got potential but would have to up his game to play in the PL, £3m probably worth a punt.

100% agree that there's no actual interest, just agent putting it out there.
Rumour was started over a month ago now, and TBH I think it's just turned into lazy journalistic rehashing.

With most players that Warnock has actually signed the press normally only get a sniff when it's more or less a done deal and a medical is on the cards.

I would have thought that if Warnock really wanted him and it was a trigger clause it would have been wrapped up by now.

Can't see any legs in this myself.

With Windass “not being one of the most popular guys” in Rangers dressing room, I can’t see Warnock chancing the runt.

Neil Warnock has admitted he wants 2 more signings that's Marko Grujic on loan and "the missing piece striker" any of you actually telling me Warnock sees an average SPL midfielder as "The missing piece striker" this story had come along from his dad Dean going around the local pubs saying he's going to Cardiff we also had a promotion scout list and a championship scout list maybe this Josh Windass would of been on the championship list but in the prem we have only made strong signings not someone who's average to sit there picking up a pay packet
