direct style suited us in the championship but will it succeed in the premiership?

Simple answer. No. Let other teams worry about our style of play.
The fact people 'talk' about it says that they are worried.

The way we play is similar to Burnley and look where they are, I would just stick to what we know for now.

We do but we won't simply because I doubt Warnock knows any other way to play

That goes for a lot of managers. They don't change what works for them

And also we cant. It would take a pretty big upheaval of the current squad and we’d have to bring in a high number of players suited to a different style and of a premier league quality which we simply can not afford.
Its taken us 5 years to re-discover our identity on the pitch again, lets not throw it away.

We rely heavily on set pieces using our aerial strength. What we need is a cheating diving cnut like Grealish or Dwight Gayle to constantly fall over to give us a chance to score. Paterson god bless him does his best to stay on his arse, but he’s not good enough at simulation.

My fear is not how direct we are, it’s the fact that we give away possession so easily. Premier teams will not need a dozen chances before they put the ball in the net.
NW desperately needs someone who can retain the ball and relieve pressure. Not hoooof it 40 yards.

Last season we had 44% possession per game as an average, this put us 4th from bottom in the possession stats for the Championship. If this is the same next season I predict we finish bottom. If you give the ball away and sit in the Premier league the quality will undo you. So yes we have to change and keep the ball more. Last season you could count on one hand the number of times Ethridge threw the ball short, not going to work in the Premier.
We also need to find more goals and not rely on midfield and defenders to dig us out.
I'm not being negative, just this is what we need to just stay up.

was it as high as 44% ?

We had a average off 44%, which is more than I thought btw. But we finished second in the championship. Its not about possession, its abouts chances on goal and coverting them.

We also finished near the top of shots on goal.
So by your reckoning, if lack of possession means we'll finish bottom. Then do the same with attempts on goal in the Premier league I predict we'll finish top 4.
Possession. What a ridiculous stat. Often doesn't tell the story of a game. How many teams play with it at the back for ten mins. Hardly threatening.
Goals scored. Goals conceded. That's all that matters in reality.
I agree we'll need to score more. By I equally think we will be hard to score against.

By the way the top 4 is to make a point. Not that I think we'll actually finish there. I'll take 17th place.

generally agree with your point about the possession stat not telling the full story.
but to play as direct as we did last year you need everyone to buy into it and often go against their natural game. these boys have played passing football from the age of ? 8 ? thats what you see at development centres and academies..and its much easier to get everyone following orders when your winning..

True. I'd like to think the new signings will play the 'Warnock way' but be a little bit smarter with it. Have a bit more nous and quality to know when the counter is on but equally know when to slow things down and keep that ball.
