Former £2.5m West Ham, Cardiff City and Bristol City striker facing uncertain future in football

Bristol Evening Post

02/06/18

Former Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard is searching for a new team after being released by Aberdeen.

He was one of three players released by the club, as Kari Arnason and Daniel Harvie were also let go.

The 31-year-old signed for the Scottish side last summer to reunite with former boss Derek McInnes,

However, he failed to score a single goal and has now been released.

Maynard joined Bristol City from Crewe Alexandra in 2008 for a club record fee of £2.25m, and made an immediate impact scoring a hat-trick on his debut in a preseason friendly against Royal Antwerp.

He went on to score 11 goals that season in a steady start to his City career, but it wasn’t until the following season where he really made his mark, scoring 20 goals including a memorable volley against QPR.

He finished his time at Bristol City with 46 goals in 132 games before leaving under controversial circumstances in 2012 to join West Ham United.

He then moved to a number of different Championship clubs including Cardiff City and MK Dons.

However, he failed to reach the heights which made him such a popular figure at Ashton Gate, and a move to Aberdeen saw his worst return in his career when he failed to score a single goal in 25 games.

His attention now turns to trying to find a new club ahead of the coming season.

Maynard won the Football League goal of the season in 2009 at City and he recently described the goal in an interview.

"When I was at Bristol City, on Boxing Day we were playing QPR away. We lost the game 2-1 but this was a game I will always remember,” said Maynard.

“I finished that season with twenty odd goals but this was the best one.

“The goal was voted the 'Football League goal of 2009".

"The ball was played up to me and without the ball touching the ground, I took two touches before flicking the ball over my shoulder and volleying it into the top corner. The keeper did not even move.”

He will end up in league 1 or 2

Would be a decent signing for someone like Newport.

He has never really recovered from the injury he got here

He was so unlucky whilst at Cardiff, an injury that took him away from playing football for Cardiff the whole season, except that Penalty he scored against Hull City at the last match of the season, so happy that he got the goal.

But I hope he does get a club because he is a great talent in football and would shock a few teams in the Championship if he ever returned to the league.
