Cardiff City targeting West Ham United and ex-Aston Villa loanee Robert Snodgrass -

Cardiff City have made West Ham player main target as a loan deal.

Cardiff City have made West Ham United midfielder Robert Snodgrass one of their top transfer targets.

Neil Warnock wants a wide man with proven Premier League experience this summer, ahead of the Bluebirds' top flight tilt, and in Snodgrass the veteran boss has identified a player he admires and has worked with before.

Media Wales understands Cardiff will make a move for Snodgrass in the coming weeks — preferably on loan — but West Ham may want to keep the Scottish international. He is valued at around £12million if the Bluebirds want a permanent deal.

It has been reported, however, that new Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini is willing to give Snodgrass the chance to prove himself in pre-season after an ill-fated spell at the London Stadium so far, following a £10.2million move from Hull City in January 2017.

The 30-year-old bid farewell to Aston Villa last week, where he spent the 2017/18 season on loan, after their 1-0 defeat to Fulham in the play-off final, prompting speculation about his future.

His post on social media said: "Devastated to lose, we tried for you and it wasn't enough, I am gutted we didn't achieve our goal, but I am delighted I got the chance to play for this terrific club and thank everybody from fans players and staff from day one making me feel at home.

"Whatever happens I have loved pulling on that jersey and met some great people "

Warnock worked briefly with Snodgrass during their time together at Leeds United and has often voiced regret over the Scot's £3million sale to Norwich in July 2012.

The Yorkshireman has remained a long-term admirer of Snodgrass. His dead ball deliveries and ability to play in a number of attacking positions, plus Premier League experience, would make him a good fit at Cardiff.

Warnock told talkSPORT last week: “A week before [the season started], Norwich came in for Snodgrass and Ken Bates said to me: ‘you’ve got to sell him for £1 million as we need the money’.

“In the end they got £3 million, and he said: ‘you can have half of whatever we get’. Then, unfortunately, two days later Ken told me the bank had stopped him from spending any money.

“Snodgrass… I could have cried. He was the one chance we had. He came to see me and I said: ‘I don’t want you to go’.

“He said: ‘just for the family gaffer, I’ve got to go!’

“And he was right and I had to let him go. That just about finished me off up there… I had no chance!”

I think so and I think that's why warnock won't go for him. Out game is all about breaking and breaking fast in the wide areas. If we don't have the pace wide then we need to change how we play. Also he may put in a great cross but Zohore can't head

Unless he does think he can play him in the middle.

Middle for me. Not 100% sure how that will work but he does put himself about so in that scenario he fits at least. And he will create goals at any level with his set piece play alone which will be vital.

Certainly not going to pay 12m for him so a loan is good, means we can pay his wages too

Mad how players prices go up example read reports Watford would want 20 million for grey when they paid 18 million for him and he didn’t have the best season last season and West Ham paid 10 million for Snodgrass he spent a season in the championship and now is worth 12 million crazy

Wide men/wingers don’t have to be fast, tricky players who get to the byline. There’s no end of classy, wide midfield players who are not known for their speed.
However, unless Warnock tweaks his formation, I’m not sure it would work for us.
Great player but probably more rumours.

Probably more of a number 10 role and probs Patterson would swap and change between the two??

Fair point but with the addition of pace is the holy grail. I think Snodgrass could do a job for us though and would be a useful signing to add options. A loan would probably be preferable because I guess his wages are high.

Brilliant if true. Can play anywhere in midfield, he’s quality. Deadly from set pieces. He’s 30, so 12m quoted is too much. NW wouldn't pay that much I'm sure (that'd be half of his budget gone). Hope its a permanant transfer to be honest though.
