Cardiff City open talks with winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing over a new contract – reports

Cardiff City are said to be in talks with winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing over a new contract.
The Bluebirds have opened up negotiations with Mendez-Laing to improve his terms and extend his current deal, according to HITC.
Mendez-Laing was one of Neil Warnock’s gambles last summer, signing on a free after taking significant steps to get his career back on track with Rochdale.
It was the winger’s big opportunity and he didn’t waste it, impressing from the off with the Bluebirds, scoring five in his first five appearances.
Despite a slight dip in form in April, Mendez-Laing was a key player for Cardiff in their successful promotion bid, manning the wing on the opposite side to Junior Hoilett.
And with Kenneth Zohore in between, the three proved to be quite the front-line for Cardiff City in a memorable campaign.
Mendez-Laing joined Cardiff on a free transfer but he was still seen as a real gamble given his unfavourable history at some clubs and his contract, both in terms of wages and length was said to have reflected the level of risk Warnock was taking.
However, the 26-year-old proved himself at the Cardiff City Stadium last season and just like Loic Damour – who was rewarded with a new contract to bring his wage closer to his team-mates – Mendez-Laing will be offered new terms this summer, according to reports.
Mendez-Laing’s current deal will expire after Cardiff’s upcoming Premier League season but it’s expected his new contract will give him a longer term in South Wales.
Having said that, the winger does have his work cut out to prove himself this summer and he will need to replicate his form from last season to get a shot at the Premier League.
Neil Warnock will be looking to strengthen his squad over the summer and Mendez-Laing knows his place is far from guaranteed.
