discussion - playing style

Tue May 29, 2018 9:46 am

Are any of you worried about our playing style in the prem?

We conceded a lot of possession in most games the season just gone and we got away with it in the championship

Do you think we will fare as well against some top teams....teams with better players to take advantage of the possession

or do we need to change our style ?

I don't think it matters, all that really matters is getting results. We play a lot more direct than most teams, I don't think that's a bad thing though and will surprise a few teams.

I think we'll be much the same.

Hard to break down. Defend well as a priority and break quickly.

Remember most of the possession we gave to teams was high in their own half. We don't concede much in the way of attempts on target and obviously goals condceded. That's a great foundation.

We're never going to play free flowing tippy tappy football. But we're going to nullify the opposition's game and hopefully get a few breaks of our own. Especially at home.

Now to add some more attacking guile.

Burley play exactly the same as us they get the ball foward quickly and try to play in the opposition half whilst defending well if not I possession we would be killed if we played too open ,the likes of fulham and wolves will be taken apart next year if they play like they did in the championship

The long ball tactic certainly worked in the Championship but as for the Premiership I seriously doubt it will, you may get away with it to start with but quality sides will eventually nullify it,and that's where I have a problem with Warnock who I fear is a one trick pony,I doubt he has a plan B in his locker so that being the case we may eventually struggle to stay up

Would suggest our style is harder to play against compared to tippy tap football some play!

If we play like we did start of season no not at all, we blew the likes Leeds who were up there at that time, and sheff Utd away, once we looked serious contenders we started the don’t concede and score method which took us up. I think Colin will know we can’t play and won’t get away with playing that way in premiership.

In fact I fancy us to play some good counter attacking football. He will look to make us solid from the back but rather than lump it I fancy is to play out more as we get more time and space to do so.

The difference with Burnley is they don’t hump the ball up front aimlessly like we do. Most every time one of our midfielders gets the ball .. bang up it goes for someone to chase. If we play that way we’ll never get the ball back off most of the teams.
I’m a bit concerned about our style.
We need a little more patience but Warnock will know all this so I trust him to tweak things around with some new signings.

I've watched Burnley a lot this season and they hit there wingers /attack with long balls alot ,we need to try and hold on to the ball better like they do once in the final 1/3

I dont see Warnock changing his basic play too much, though I would like to see a gutsy play maker brought in to give the team a bit more oomph someone to help Ralls or Gunners if he is still here.Remember the aim of the game is to win we are not going to see pretty football week in week out,Warnock is a master at what he does, his man management is superb while overall we will struggle, Warnock has enough in his locker to out wit enough opponents whoever he brings in it will be horses for courses. :bluebird:

Yeah let's just hope some of those horses are thoroughbreds and not just old nags!

Yes they do as I’ve seen them as well wez.
The main difference is they pass the ball long, finding players and are more patient than us. We treat the ball like a hot potato most of the time and try to get rid of it immediately hitting hopeless and aimless long balls. Hopefully that will change slightly as I don’t mind a more direct style.

I think if we sign better players we will be better at holding it up better wing play we need

To base your game plan on having less possession than your opponents requires a solid defence, that has a good understanding. This is an area we are well stocked and it’s the strongest department within our squad, all be it not tested at the highest level yet. We’ll be looking to counter attack with pace, which is where our wingers will earn their money. For this reason, I’d like to see a creative midfielder signed over the Summer to turn defence into attack quickly, but accurately.

Leicester City won the Premier League in the not too distant past, despite averting less possession than their opponents over the entire season, so possession isn’t as important in modern day football. It’s what we do with our chances that will define our season imo and hopefully lead to us avoiding relegation. :bluebird: :bluebird: :bluebird:
