Should Neil Warnock be given freedom of the city?

BBC

Wednesday 9th May 2018

There have already been calls for the boss to receive the freedom of the city.

Sheffield-born Warnock is a seasoned veteran when it comes to securing promotion for Championship sides, with Cardiff City’s achievement bringing his promotion tally to eight in total.

Public figures are now calling for him to receive the highest honour the city can bestow on an individual, by making him an Honorary Freeman of Cardiff.

People who have previously received the honour include Dame Shirley Bassey in 2012, war hero and former WRU president Sir Tasker Watkins in 2006, and Nelson Mandela in 1998.

Cardiff Central MP Jo Stevens is among those to lend her voice to the campaign.

She said:

“I don’t see why not. He’s brought pride to the club and has been incredibly successful in bringing the city together.

“The club and the city are going to enjoy a big boom from being in the Premier League. He’s an excellent candidate.

“He’s come in when Cardiff were second from bottom and really in the doldrums and done it through hard work and graft – not always pretty football but successful football.

“I was at the game and the feel around the club and solidarity was so different from how it was last time we got promoted and (Warnock) is a big figure in why that has happened.”

Cardiff South and Penarth MP Stephen Doughty said:

“Neil Warnock’s achievement as the only manager to achieve eight promotions is truly remarkable – and his passion for our city and our Bluebirds community is clear. I can think of no better way to recognise that locally than offering him the freedom of the city.”
Cardiff councillor Keith Jones said Cardiff’s promotion with Warnock at the helm was a “tremendous achievement”.

“I think if he can keep us up and establish us as Premier League team then I’m sure he would get Freedom of the City.

Cardiff council’s website says the award of Freedom of the City is given to those who have served in some “exceptional capacity”, or upon those whom the city wishes to bestow an honour.

Freedom of the City is not enough, a statue outside the Castle and renaming Sloper Road Warnock Way at the very least. :occasion5:

Good call Tony but for me he's achieved part 1 with part 2 to follow, namely, establishing us in the prem. For me time to judge would be after his last day is done at the club.

Warnock will always be a hero to me but being serious you make a very good point. When we went up in 2013 MM also had a God like status but unfortunately that didn't last long.

It can be argued that there were specific circumstances why MM's achievements are not universally admired anymore but if NW keeps us up next season then if I were him I'd retire and accept all the accolades.

I was thinking this morning about this point.
If we manage to stay up, will he sign a new deal or will he retire on top!? :ayatollah:
Over to Kevin Blackwell?

I think the recognition for NW is more to do with what he has achieved in his WHOLE career. A career that will probably end at Cardiff.

But this is not really a thing surely. NW needs to turn the fortunes of Cardiff Airport around and get the European Capital of Culture for Cardiff before they should even name a cul-de-sac after him.
