Derby County's Craig Bryson savours 'unbelievable' promotion with Cardiff City

Derby Telegraph

Wednesday 9th Mat 2018

Craig Bryson says winning promotion to the Premier League with Cardiff City is "unbelievable".

Bryson has been on loan at Cardiff for the season after joining from Derby County in August and will now return to Derby County as the loan deal has expired.

The Scottish midfielder helped Neil Warnock's side to promotion courtesy of a 0-0 draw against Reading, which was enough to clinch second place in the Championship table.

Derby's two-time player of the year played the full 90 minutes at the Cardiff City Stadium, his 22nd appearance for the Welsh outfit.

Having gone close to promotion with the Rams, Bryson is delighted to have achieved the feat, albeit with a different team.

"It's unbelievable," he told the club's website. "I have been waiting for something like this my whole career.

"It’s been 16 years I've played professional football and I have never been promoted, I came close with Derby the past few years but (this) was unbelievable and a day I'll never forget in my career.

"It was unbelievable from the fans from the first whistle to the last. They were unbelievable, stayed with us and helped us when Birmingham scored.

"Maybe now in the press Cardiff will get the credit they deserve. Everyone talks about Fulham, Villa, Middlesbrough but we just go about our business."

It's times like this, when everyone is still euphoric, that it's easy to let the heart rule the head ... however, I hope we don't look to secure his services for next season. At this moment in time he still has a lot to offer a Championship side but in the key midfield position in the Premier you need more quality. You got to be able to put your foot on the ball, thread a telling pass and of course ... tackle!
Bryson is one of the fittest players I've seen in a City shirt - he just doesn't ease up from the first whistle to the final one. For someone of his age it's immense! He should go back to Derby with glowing praise from Warnock and everyone associated with our club. Maybe Derby will rethink their position with Bryson and realise what an asset he could be to any team seeking promotion from the Championship. Derby management would also do well to sit down with the player and tap into what he's picked up from working under Warnock.
Thanks Craig, true professional and it was clear from the promotion celebrations that you enjoyed your time here and fitted in well with your team mates.

100% a Warnock type player I have a feeling he will be back as a cheap squad player. Any successful team needs the right chemistry and Bryson is the right type for our team. I was pleased to see his name on the team sheet on sunday

I am sure I read at the time he came to us that there was an option to buy him at the end of the season. If we had stayed down then that may have been an option but as others have mentioned the premier league is another level.

Agree entirely Alan; we certainly need more quality in midfield in particular in the Premier. Bryson has been useful: he gets in the opposition's faces and closes them down effectively but his contribution apart from that is limited. I see him as a Don Cowie type player and that didn't work during our last Premier stint. Still, thanks for everything Craig and I hope you can replicate your success in the Championship next season.

I think if he remains injury free he will do well for Derby again next season.

At a reasonable price I think Bryson is just the kind of player we should be looking at, no he wont start every game but you know what you getting and lets be honest we will need players like him next season in and around the squad be it a sub to close down a game.

Good Championship player, but we need more quality in the Premier....both Woods and Sawyers of Brentford are much better.

Spot on with this assessment.
Done a good job but lacking in quality with regards to foot on the ball, controlling a game and passing. He runs and runs but that’s not enough for the prem.

He did a cracking job for us! Probably letting my heart rule my head, but I’d love to keep him. Love 100% players like Bryson! I’ll always appreciate what he did for us. Thank you Craig

It's the odd 1-5 players like him we needed when we was up and had to play more eg Mark Hudson to stand a chance of staying up.

A lot of our better honest hard working players never really got the chance in the Prem and I think that cost more than Malky getting sacked, Turner and Caulker continually was partnered in the Prem while Hudson captain and arguably with Marshall our POTS the year before didn't get a sniff.

Defo like to seem him in the squad next year, you need players like him who just run and chase.

Thinking about this loan to end of season thing, can Mitrovik (or whatever his name is) still play for Fulham?

I'd also have Bryson back as cover.
