VINCE ALM:
Well what a day night for me personally Sunday!
The football match turned out to be a bit of a damp squib in the end, with Birmingham beating Fulham it allowed us to get promoted with a draw rather than a win we craved for to put the icing on the cake. However, what a season we’ve had this campaign, against all the odds including very little luck and less than our fair share of big refereeing decisions going our way, we have managed to find ourselves promoted. 90 points is a good haul of points for this division and in most seasons would be enough to win the league.
The fact Neil Warnock has had no budget to work with and had to still reduce wages during the past 18 months, it truly is a miracle we were even competing let alone vying for2nd spot, compared to the other 5 teams in the top six. It is a testament to him, his team, and the players who bought into what he wanted and delivered it. His net spend assembling this squad has cost us around a million pound allowing for the extra we have to pay Bolton for Madine truly incredible.
It all started against Burton first game of the season when we had a late winner just like 2012 2013 against Huddersfield to get the season off to a winning start. We then went on that 5-match winning streak that set the season up. Throughout the season we had no luck with injuries, on times we had 12 first team players out, and with a small squad it occasionally took its toll just like at Christmas when we lost 4 on the bounce with the whole of the spine of the team out injured. What was refreshing though I never heard Warnock use it as an excuse he just got on with it and accepted it as part of the game, unlike Steve Bruce at Villa who moaned about there two or three key injuries which held no water with me once you seen the replacements in their squad.
As I said we had very little luck afforded to us this time, including referee decisions, injuries, and our run in of games which was particularly tough with 4 out of the last 6 away playing 2 out of the top 6 during that run in away. We were the team nobody fancied to do anything, and they were hoping and praying for us to slip up but this manager and squad were made of sterner stuff.
Our football was not easy on the eye like the other teams, but it was affective, and we won 27 of our 46 matches the 2nd highest total behind Wolves. Pundits, supporters of other clubs were reluctant to say anything positive about the club, the style of football, and the squad until the last few weeks, and even then, they were all saying Fulham deserved to get promoted ahead of us because of the football they played. Well we have been there before and wore the T shirt playing nice football only to fail at the final hurdle, and I have much preferred this campaign to previous, because we have been more direct, had more shots on target, and shots at goal then ever we did playing football along the back four and crabbing our way down the pitch. There is no right way or wrong way to play football if your tactics are to win a game.
We have been in every game this season we played in creating chances and could have had a point or all three in all the games we also lost except for the Preston away game which was poor. Although the support was slow to pick up throughout the season the ones who came and went away fully supported the team and got behind them. There were several differences for me than in previous seasons, and that was the way the crowd reacted to going behind! Instead of getting on the players back, we ramped up the volume and got behind them supporting them to score achieving a couple of victories after going behind.
Neil was able to strengthen the squad and get a few players back after January including Callum Patterson who he converted to midfield producing a prolific scoring run through February and March. He was a major part in us achieving that 8-match winning run during that period providing us with a buffer before that incredible tough run in. The players showed there true grit time after time this season not dwelling on disappointment just picking themselves up and going again. It was an incredible journey and I feel very privileged to have been part of it.
Neil Warnock and his staff have managed to unite this club on and off the field and drag us up from depths of despair staring into the abyss to playing in the number league in the world. Whether you like premier league football all not you must admit it was a remarkable achievement by him and his squad in doing so he has reborn the whole club.
As I said earlier it took a while for the fans to start to turn up in large numbers although there were samples of what was to come throughout the season. The supporters club as usual ran coaches to every game and we were well supported with our usual loyal members, but also plenty of new fans who we welcomed throughout the season. We had some fantastic trips away this season and the company as always was first class on the coaches, we had some laughs, you had the moaners at the back of coach 3 which allowed us all to keep our feet on the ground (Love them all really) and we had a load of new youngsters start following us away regularly which was fantastic. My fellow committee members are fantastic all of them doers who get involved, no shirkers at all probably one of the hardest working committee I have been part of in the 20 years I have been on it. For our loyal members and the committee and I am really pleased the team done the business on the pitch.
The wider support since February has been first class, passionate, loud, supportive, and committed. Some of the away games at Brentford, Villa, Norwich, Derby, Sheffield united, and Hull have been as good as anything I have heard or watched in my 50 years following the City! Also, the home games Nottingham Forest, Wolves, and last Sunday the same no different to the good days we had at Ninian Park.
Some of the older generation knock the modern songs, and ultra-style support of the modern game, but for me this is their time, and everything moves on. I have been brought up in an era of major changes in all aspects of life, industry, music, communication, etc and have learnt to embrace a fair amount of it. These kids are no less passionate than I was at their age, they are no less fiercely loyal to the club as I was at their age, and they are no different to me when I was their age trying to bring in new songs, by changing words to songs other teams have made up or thinking of ones themselves. They are part of our new family and are most welcome. The only small criticism I have is the occasional damage to toilets and seats as in Hull and Villa I’m not sure if they are aware, but Cardiff City Football club will have to pay for the damage they caused, and it’s the same everywhere next time you are frustrated lads try not to kick a seat we only end up paying for it.
I would like to mention the recent passing away of Dave Jones who was a great loyal supporter of the CCSC and a big part of my football life it was sad that he was unable to see that wonderful day, but his children were there to support us. I am Sure Dave, Hoppy, Richard Jones, Mark Watkins, Mikey Dye and everyone else who has passed away were then in spirit along with My dad.
Like to thank every supporter who made my day such a special day on Sunday; The support around ground was good before during, and after the game. I must give a special mention to the Canton Stand been first class all season, but 2nd half Sunday when Cardiff started slowly against they were unbelievable, they started singing there was an incredible noise coming from the end in support of the team, which had the effect of Cardiff picking their game up.
A Special mention also, to Carl Davies and all the Holyhead boys who made my day a very special one, all the fans who bought beers, drinks Glenn Jones special mention for you, during my pub crawl around Canton and Town. I really enjoyed everyone company Sunday/Monday help make it a special night with lots of fun, laughs, and reminiscing. Also, to Scotlands number one Cardiff fan Paul Cummings, great company as always Paul we had a great drink together into the early hours of Monday morning, but I couldn’t understand a word you and Kevin Mc Naughton were saying to each other! I finally got to bed at around 5.30am to 6 a very happy Bluebird.
Thank you everyone for a wonderful season as I have said before savour these moments they come along very rarely. Have a great summer look forward to seeing you all in the premier league next season. Thank you for the memories
