Sam Hammam lauds Tan for learning lessons

Lebanese businessman Sam Hamman owned Cardiff City between 2000 and 2006 and has spoken about current Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan and the way he has learned lessons from the past.

Hammam told BBC what he made of the club’s resurgence under the stewardship of Tan and Neil Warnock.

SAM HAMMAM:

“I get the impression that the Vincent Tan model 2018 is different
It is different to the model that was there in 2013.”

“I believe he is more experienced and has learned the lesson.
Tan is a different man than he was back in 2010 and 2013, he’s more experienced, he is batting more steady, his feet are more on the ground.”
“His input and support and direction must have had an important effect on Neil Warnock and the success of the club.
Also the fans, albeit really due to Warnock, everybody’s pulling in the same direction. The fans, the team and the management, the club and the media, everybody’s pulling together and this is making a very big advantage to us.”
Sam Hamman

Cardiff's promotion under Mackay later led to financial problems after the fees paid for players such as Andreas Cornelius, who arrived for approximately £8million in June 2013 but left without scoring a goal.

"I phoned (Tan) and I told him we have no business to be paying this sort of money to buy players, we have no business to be paying these sort of wages," Hammam added.

Hammam went on to further laud the impact of Warnock, whose shrewd transfer dealings and rapport with supporters has brought the club back together.

The Bluebirds are now braced for a record Cardiff City Stadium crowd for Sunday's showdown with Reading.

"The fans, albeit really due to Warnock, (means) everybody’s pulling in the same direction," added Hammam.

"The fans, the team and the management, the club and the media, everybody’s pulling together and this is making a very big advantage to us."

Warnock's healthy relationship with Tan, chairman Mehmet Dalman and chief executive Ken Choo have made for a united club, as Hammam also noted.

"He is my kind of man, I really like his style," added the Lebanese businessman on Warnock.

"With relatively less money he has put us in a position where we may hopefully get automatic promotion.

"He's got what it takes on all fronts. He knows which players to buy, which players to keep, which players to let go and how to motivate the team.

"He also knows how to pick the team and has proved time and time again that he can make the changes on the pitch during the game... most of the times he got it right.

"He isn't the type that wants those fancy players who can flick the ball from behind their back and then balance it on their you-know-what.

"He wants somebody who is tough, who can get stuck in, but also who has the quality and the heart."

How on earth did Tan allow this to happen. Did this transfer go on behind his back. Tan employs people to look after his businesses. Its well documented Tan blames Malky for all of this but I'm struggling to believe he is 100% to blame. Acorn was untried so was a risk so to pay £8m was crazy. I recall Nigel Pearson at the time the Leicester manager was interested in Acorn but would have not gone above £500k to buy him. So how did we end up spending all that money for him?

What great praise from Sam don’t like the guy after he nearly killed our club and tried to put Cardiff out of business for good. But respect due takes a big person to publicly laud his nemesis. Shows how far tan has come to get sams admiration. Possibly two premier league promotion what an amazing job tan has done with the help of his team and coaching staff. Hats off to each and every one of them. Tan has been the one loyal constant through all the ups and downs to Cardiff.

Fair play mr hamman for moving on and showing respect let’s hope all the bitter fans who live in the past can come into the present and fully enjoy the tan and wArnock era.

Can’t wait till Sunday. See you all there.

I was told that David Moyes was interested at the time Malky went to visit him at Everton, then Moyes got the Man U job so we ended up with him !!!

I don't know why Hammam is even making a comment. The man robbed us even more than Malky.

and where were you when we were in red heading for crowds of 4,000? Didn't see the likes of you praising Tan then.

Im not sure how you can Blame Tan for Malkys poor signings, Tan at the time was still pretty new to football and its workings, he foolishly trusted Malky that is true to do what was in the best interest of the club and to spend the money wisely. Tan was naïve and I have no doubt that won’t happen again going forward no matter what league we are in.

I will say Sam has a cheek saying “we have no business to be paying this sort of money to buy players, we have no business to be paying these sort of wages”, Sam was the one who started the gravy train for players at city, paying huge silly wages and fees while in what was division 3 and 2 back then, wasn’t Peter Thorne on 10k a goal bonus and in the end we couldn’t play him because we couldn’t afford for him to score. Yet Sam is giving advice to Tan, the man who had to pay Sam off because he couldn’t sort out his own mess and debt. Say what you like about Tan but he at least seems to be accountable for the debt he makes.

I don't know the full ins and outs of how tranfers go but I do recall Sam saying how he hated paying thee high wages. At the time I thought if you hate it that much why get yourself in a position to have to pay them. At the end of the day the Buck stops with him.

While it maybe true as a good owner you can only try and back your manager. If he is putting faith in a manager you have to believe he will do what's best with the transfers. If he said no to the Transfers or picked his own players then that would also be wrong. I don't think there is such thing as a perfect chairman/owner its impossible to get everything right

we all know it was none of Tans doing that. He had made such a mess of things he had to listen to those who knew something about football.

Warnock was most likely Dalmans idea but he had to wait until Trollope made such a mess of it, who was Tans ideas by the way, until he managed to get his way. The only praise I will give Tan is that he finally decided to keep himself out of stuff he knew nothing about.

In that case are you going to praise tan for hiring Warnock and looks like getting us to the premiership ?????

we all know it was none of Tans doing that.

So he is to blame for everything because he is the man at the top but doesn't get much credit for the good work :banghead: :banghead:

The only credit he deserves is for finally listening to others that know what they are talking about.

So all the blame as he is the top dog and none of the credit

Such is life. No escaping his history.

Lol. That’s fair enough if that you opinion you entitled to it. So I’m guessing as you are so principled you don’t attend matches as long as tan is in charge then? And sir I take my hat off to you for standing by you beliefs. Better that than you attending games and being a complete bigot.

Respect sir you can read Sunday’s match report on here.

Just throwing it out there, but maybe something to do with the £2m payment Sam is due if we are promoted to the PL? ;)
