Bristol C, Aston Villa and Cardiff C monitoring new goalkeeper - reports
Could a French goalkeeper be the first summer signing for one of these clubs

Bristol City are reported to be one of a trio of clubs looking at signing one of the outstanding goalkeepers in French football.

The Robins, Aston Villa and Cardiff City are all interested in signing Stade Reims goalkeeper Edouard Mendy according to Football Insider website.

Mendy, 26, has conceded just 17 goals in 30 Ligue 2 matches this season as Reims have stormed to promotion into Ligue 1 - the French top flight.

Stade de Reims have a remarkable 15 point lead over second place Nimes with two game remaining and their impressive goalkeeper has been a big part of it keeping 18 clean sheets this season in the league.

No wonder three Championship sides, two of whom are chasing promotion into the Premier League next season, are interested in bringing him in.

Understandably promoted Reims are said to be keen in keeping their talented shot stopper but are bracing themselves for interest from a host of clubs.

Bristol City currently have three goalkeepers on their books in their senior squad, with Frank Fielding first choice and Luke Steele and Max O’Leary back ups.

Neil Etheridge has been brilliant this season. Hope he is not discarded next season.

He has been brilliant but he is untested in the premiership if we go up. We will need at least another keeper if we go up.

He was also untested in the championship prior to this season. Having only played a couple of times for Charlton. So tested or not I think he’s more than capable.

Etheridge has surpassed all expectations this season, he has been the quiet backbone of the first team and without a doubt the most improved individual in the squad. I think we are wise to search out a second keeper to provide competition and cover whether we stay in this division or secure a monumental promotion.

Yes I'm not saying he won't be capable but we would be very naive to go into a season with just him as a realistic number one especially with him missing a chunk of the season. We need two capable number ones if we go up.

I'd personally hope we go up and Villa stay down allowing us to swoop in and pay £5m to United for Sam Johnstone. Then let him and Etheridge fight for the #1 jersey next season!
