The three teams who dropped down from the Premier League last season are all in the top six teams whose squad costs the most. But only, one of those sides has a chance of returning to the top flight.

Middlesbrough currently sit in fifth spot and have a squad cost of £62.7million. Boro made two of the five most expensive Championship transfers this season but despite having the joint second highest squad cost they haven’t run away with the league.

The other two relegated sides make it even more apparent that money doesn’t guarantee results. Hull City are currently 18th and Sunderland 24th, both have had seasons to regret despite have squad costs of £62.7m and £40.6m respectively. Sunderland have now been relegated to League One.

High flyers Cardiff and Millwall are defying the odds with both teams experiencing fantastic seasons despite limited budgets.

The Bluebirds are currently second and are going toe to toe with Fulham for the title. :bluebird:

Millwall’s performance is even more extraordinary. The Lions have the second lowest squad cost in the Championship failing to even break into seven figures (£800,000), yet they’re now just on the edge of the play-offs.

Correct, its unbelievable, Warrnock has done it virtually by himself, because his spending is peanuts compared to the big clubs :thumbright: :thumbright: :bluebird: :bluebird:

How have we spent as much or more than Derby, they've spent £41mill ?

Cardiff only paid £2mill for Gary Madine & £1.5mill for Lee Tomlin.

Cardiff City :bluebird:

Squad Cost: £14.6m

League Position: 2

He does do well in the market, however I consider his biggest strength is organisation and getting the best out of what players he has at his disposal

its more about the overall squad cost not how much we spent this season.

This season we have spent more than derby and you have to include payments based on bonuses which makes madine a lot more than £2m

according to transfer market site (which i think this article was based off) us and derby both spent about 11m - but we have spent 9m net and derby have made 19m net

If we go up, yes Gary Madine will cost us an extra £4mill.

Also, hasn't Millwall done amazingly well on only £800,000?

agree its totally misleading.eg.Leeds sold 3 players for 22mill then re invested it in other players....had we pushed the transfers of Zohore, Bennet and Morrison and done likewise we would be much higher on the list..credit to both NW and VT for keeping players that fit instead of rolling the dice.

Agree the figures can be a bit misleading if it does not count fees received for players sold. Leeds United have sold a whole host of players for big money in the last few seasons and if this was included there team would effectively cost nothing.

Remarkable performance by Warnock and business acumen by the board considering the amount spent by some of the so called bigger clubs.
