Cardiff City midfielder Aron Gunnarsson undergoes surgery after injury at Hull

Cardiff City's Aron Gunnarsson has undergone surgery after limping off the pitch as the Bluebirds took on Hull City over the weekend.

The Icelandic international limped off during the early stages of Cardiff's 2-0 win over Hull City on Saturday.

The midfielder, who previously spent four months of the season sidelined with an ankle injury, was forced off early on in proceedings on Humberside, which saw a double from Sean Morrison bring the Bluebirds to within a win of promotion to the Premier League.

Gunnarsson's withdrawal was arguably the only blot on an otherwise hugely successful afternoon, with the player himself looking in some pain as he was helped off the pitch.



The Iceland football captain is said to be optimistic about recovering in time for the World Cup in Russia, but the news comes just days before Cardiff's crucial showdown with Reading on Sunday to gain automatic promotion.



Iceland Review reports the midfielder said: "I’m in good hands here in Wales.

"Top physicians and physiotherapists are treating me and I’m told if everything goes as hoped for then I have a good chance of recovering before our first game in Moscow. Time will make this clear but I am choosing to be positive and optimistic."

Warnock admitted the initial signs were worrying when speaking after the win on Saturday.

He said: "His studs just got caught and he went over on his ankle.

"But his knee got hurt too so he's got both iced up at the minute.

"I thought it was bad because he doesn't go down too easily.

"But he was still delighted for the lads when they came in and it's hard for him but he's been instrumental in sustaining our position."

I’m not a big fan but he puts a decent shift in for us.
I really hope he’s fit for the World Cup and then finds himself a club where he wants - as long as it’s not us.

Me thinks thats the last we’ll see of the Ice Man. Thanks for the memories Gunnar, a great servant. Shame not willing to stay, but as Warnock pointed out, the years in the Championship take their toll on the body. Pastures new and all the best for the World Cup, how you make it lad. Its Rallsy’s time next to be our midfield man.

Absolutely speedy recovery Gunnar, I hope you make the World Cup. I know others will bitch but he's Mr Cardiff City for me. One of the best midfielders we've ever had, although he never had the talent of the likes of Koumas. However if we went up I don't think he would make the Premier cut; but I wish him all the best.

Sad news about his injury. I hope he’s fit for the World Cup and that which ever team he goes to, appreciate his skills.

Personally I don't rate Gunners as highly as some and thankful he will not be part of Sunday's midfield setup.

That said he has always given 100% and to blame him for Derby is really quite stupid

agree they looked much better against bolton, burton and birmingham than gunner looked against neves,grealish and hudlestone.

The problem with Gunnarsson is not that he has lost his ability, he showed beginning of season he still has that! He just wasn’t fit enough, he missed months, had 45mins for Iceland and was deemed fit enough for our run in. He should have been eased or used correctly. I am not going to tell our Colin he got wrong as we are 2nd, can’t argue with that, I do however disagree with the way Gunnarsson was picked week in week out. But, I am not a manager for a reason. However, a World Cup and good pre season and Gunnarsson will be still a class player.

I totally agree with this, but as you say, who are we to argue with Sir Neil? I'm not worthy enough to lace Warnock's boots.
