NEIL WARNOCK: "MY 3 SUBSTITUTES MADE IT A LOT WORSE IF I'M REALLY HONEST"

“They don’t need any talking to, our lads,” said the Yorkshireman. “If I’m really honest, the three substitutes I made, it made us a lot worse.

“I don’t think it helps our cause at all. We tried to give a new lease of life at 1-1 and it didn’t work out like that. We missed Gary (Madine) more than anyone.

“We are punching above our weight and we have to try to play like that. What will be will be.

“There are certain things that shouldn’t have happen but if I have my way then they won’t happen again. But it’s not just Cardiff City, it’s all over the world. If you lose concentration, you get punished.”

'I think everyone’s expecting them to win tonight' - Warnock on Fulham

Neil Warnock on Fulham:

"I think everyone’s expecting them to win tonight. I imagine by the last day of the season Birmingham won’t have anything to play for.
So it’s down to us really. Last eight or nine games, when you look at ours and Fulham’s runs, we’ve played all of the big teams.
It could have been easier. I don’t think we’ve had the rub of the green with referees recently."

"I think it was a definite penalty at 1-0 the other night so there’s a bit of bitterness there but every club feels like that at this stage of the season and it’s great to have it still in our hands."

Will you watch Fulham on Friday?

NEIL WARNOCK:

No. I watched the Brentford game. They should've had a penalty, they should have scored a good goal.

I might watch something like the Queen. I've recorded it on Netlflix. So I might watch two or three of them. So I don't think there'll be anything in that respect. Birmingham won't be easy. You just don't know in this league do you. Anybody can beat anyone else. Burton battered Derby didn't they. That's why I love the league really because you don't know what's around the corner.

Do you expect it to go down to the wire?

NEIL WARNOCK:

I think every club apart from Wolves would love to be in our situation on 86 points with a group of lads who are genuine. We're limited at times, but it shows how far we've come, to be where we are.

Some of these big clubs below us, why aren't they where we are?

“Our fans have been great all season, travelling all over the country to support us."

“It gives you a lift when you see them in the corner at an away ground. They’ve been key to our season and now it’s all about sticking together, staying positive and I’m sure we can do it."

Warnock hoping to ‘prove people wrong’ by keeping Fulham at bay in the race for automatic promotion

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock says he’s hoping to ‘prove people wrong’ by holding on to second spot.

Jokanovic’s men are currently on a run of 22 games unbeaten, but it is still in Cardiff’s hands with a one-point gap still in pace.

Fulham, however, face already relegated Sunderland at home on Friday night and they can pile the pressure on the Bluebirds ahead of their trip to face a resurgent Hull on Saturday.

NEIL WARNOCK:

And for Warnock, who sees tonight’s game as a foregone conclusion, the pressure is already on. He said: “I don’t think anyone can see anything happening other than a win tonight and Birmingham won’t have anything to play for.

“It’s down to us. When you look at our run, we’ve played all the big teams. When I looked in February, I thought if we could be close after such a difficult run of games then we can’t ask any more than that.

“We haven’t had any rub of the green with the referees, I still look back at Millwall but I think every club will feel like that at this stage of the season.

“It’s still in our hands and they’re great bunch of lads. We get over disappointments and get on. You can’t dwell on it. It’s very unlike us to make the mistakes we made there and I don’t expect us to make them again.

The Bluebirds looked a shadow of themselves in the second-half on Tuesday night with a usually reliable defence falling apart against Derby.

There were defensive errors aplenty at pride Park, and such errors at the Kcom stadium against a free-scoring Hull City could hand Fulham control heading into the final day of the season.

However, Warnock didn’t need to give his players the hair-dryer treatment after Tuesday’s defeat and for him, it’s quite clear where things went wrong.

“They don’t need any talking to, our lads,” added the Yorkshireman.

For the Cardiff City faithful, it’s an unbearable situation, especially give the collapses they’ve seen at the club in the past.

It feels all too familiar that the Bluebirds are starting to lose their grip with just two games to go and that mentality of letting an opportunity slip is starting to set in.

But as Warnock is quick to point out, Cardiff have already defied the odds to get into this position and with two games to go, they only have to rely on themselves.

“To be in our situation, there’s a lot of teams below us who would snap our hands off. They said this morning, when I was listening, that it’s quite a remarkable story, really.

“I’ve been really proud for most of the season and they’ve not let me down.

“It would be the best, the most difficult achievement I’ve ever had, to get us up. It’s still a good achievement just to get where we are! Only when you’re behind the scenes that you realise what we had to do to get us here.

“It’s quite possible we will fall at the last hurdle, but I think we’ve had a great season anyone and the fans will as well. It’s surprising what happens at this stage of the season.

“In the past I’ve felt the pressure but the only pressure on me is that I want to get an eighth promotion. I just think it’s an amazing feat what we’ve done this season.

“Not many people get the opportunity to do what these lads have the opportunity to do, so I just hope they grasp it.

“I can’t do any more than just prepare them for that and give them a chance, but for us to be on a par with the clubs that I’ve mentioned is quite amazing really, and we’re going to do our best to stay up there.”

'We missed Gary Madine more than anyone'

On Gary Madine and Yanic Wildschut:

"I thought that when Gary was on he dominated the centre-halves, I thought we were weaker when I brought on the three subs if I’m honest."

"It’s difficult picking the team."

"I was trying to give us a new lease of life with the substitutions and obviously it didn’t work out like that and I thought we missed Gary more than anyone."

Chris Coleman, manager of Sunderland

On Chris Coleman, Neil Warnock said:

"Chris would like to do well, but no disrespect to him, they are where they are."

"They did well against us for a while but they did get beaten 4-0."

"Birmingham’s a different ball game and I think they’ve done quite well under Garry [Monk]."

"Reading are fighting for their lives as well. There are no easy games."

"To be in our situation, a lot of people will look at what we’ve got and how much we’ve spent and be envious."

'It’s an amazing feat what we’ve done this season'

If Cardiff City go up to the Premier League, it would be Neil Warnock’s eighth promotion.

NEIL WARNOCK:

"At the moment this would be the best. This would be the most difficult and would be the greatest.
But it’s still a great achievement to get us where we are."

"I don’t think past events [Cardiff falling short in previous years] matters, it depends on individual teams.

I think we’ve had a great season whatever. When we’ve had a bad result the glass is half empty and when it’s going well it’s half full."

"In the past I’ve felt the pressure but the only pressure on me is that I want to get an eighth promotion."

"I just think it’s an amazing feat what we’ve done this season."

"I think Fulham will get the points and I don’t think Villa will come in. I think I’ve finished in every position for the play-offs, I think."

"I just think it’s an amazing feat what they’ve done this season. We’ve overcome a lot of injuries and a lot of bad decisions.
Hopefully it won’t be decided on a referee’s decision, because we won’t get it! "

NEIL WARNOCK:

"We are punching above our weight"

"I put it like that we have to win at Hull to stay up. That’s the way I’m approaching it.
Usually I’m going in to try and keep teams up at this stage of the season."

"We are punching above our weight and that’s why we’ve got to try and play like that. What will be will be."

"There are certain things that happened the other night that shouldn’t."

"But when you see Koscielny not being able to defend a ball from 50 yards it shows what can happen."

"I’ve not seen excessive nerves but if you don’t get nerves at a time like this, there’s something wrong with you. That’s what you thrive on."

NEIL WARNOCK: " Lee Tomlin"

'He’s a good bloke, but whatever will be' - Warnock on Tomlin

Lee Tomlin, on loan from Cardiff City, in action against Nottingham Forest

"We said we’d talk. I met [Nottingham Forest manager Aitor] Karanka at the game last week and we said we’d have a chat at the end of the season about it."

"He’s a good bloke, but whatever will be will be on that."

"I speak to Lee quite a lot, the likeable rogue that he is. He’s rooting for us as well and we had a good laugh."

On Hull and Sunderland struggles...

NEIL WARNOCK:

"They’ve lost few players, Hull, but they’ve got some good pros. Everybody has a sticky spell when they come out of there.
This isn’t an easy league, especially for lads that haven’t played in the Championship."

"Whether they’re English or from abroad, it’s a hard league and catches people by surprise."

"The teams that go down this year will expect to go straight back up. It doesn’t work like that.
It’s a difficult league, but it’s a great league and I do enjoy."

On Wildschut...

NEIL WARNOCK:

"Before he went on, I told him to make sure if he’s in the defensive half not to do anything silly, so he obviously listened to me, didn’t he?"

"We all make mistakes don’t we and it’s a good lesson, not just for him, but a good lesson for the other lads and I’ve been saying that to lads in different areas."
"It’s a simple lesson you’ve got to learn and unfortunately for Yanic, it’s a hard thing to learn."

Fulham could be heading for unwanted record

Neil Warnock has said on several occasions that the promotion race is likely to go right down to the wire.

Given the form of rivals Fulham, he’s probably not wrong.

You’d have to fancy the Cottagers to get the job done against both Sunderland and Birmingham before the end of the season, meaning Cardiff will surely have to win both of their remaining games to pip them to second place.

Should they be successful, Warnock’s men would condem Fulham to the rather unwanted record of being the first side to score more than 90 points without achieving automatic promotion.
