Chris Coleman may be handed an escape route from relegated Sunderland - by Championship side Ipswich - Mirror Online

Daily Mirror

Thursday 26th April 2018

Chris Coleman is set to be given an escape route from Sunderland by Championship club Ipswich.

His future is in doubt at the Stadium of Light after the club were relegated to League One on Saturday.

Coleman admits he has never spoken to owner Ellis Short and has no idea what the club’s financial plan is to mount a comeback next season.

The former Wales boss is of the stature that Town are looking for.

Coleman will need backing with cash to rebuild Sunderland or he could be lured south.

The Tractor Boys had been keen to speak to former defender Tony Mowbray about their managerial vacancy.

But after guiding Blackburn to League One promotion on Tuesday, he has rebuffed Ipswich’s interest.

And ex-Leicester boss Nigel Pearson, currently in charge of Belgian second tier side OH Leuven, has also done the same while they have been priced out of a move for Luton’s League Two promotion-winning boss Nathan Jones.

What a joke, they will soon realise how good McCarthy was with no money when Coleman takes them down ;)

Ipswich aren't going anywhere anytime soon. He would be better off staying at sunderland and trying to get them up.

Totally agree. Ipswich is a dead end job. Much more potential trying to turn Sunderland around. I think Ipswich fans will soon be gutted they wanted McCarthy out

Spot on.

Why they let McCarthy go I’ll never know. Good manager at this level.

If he gets a job in the Championship with enough finances to bring in his own players, they will compete for promotion.

Another manager, along with Warnock, who would be a great fit for our club. Our fans would love the banter he gives.

Always respected McCarthy and hope he carries on in the Championship. Again, like Warnock, a great man manager.

Summed it up a bit more in my post, but you’ve put it lot simply and I agree.

Coleman thought he’d be a hero and save Sunderland. But it was a big mistake to go there.

I remember how he failed at Fulham, Coventry and Sociedad and this is one more to add to the list. Even as a Jack, should be remembered as an absolute legend for our country along with the squad.... but the two questions I ask are:

1. How much of Euro 2016 and the qualification was down to him?

2. Is he built for international management rather than club management?

He has pulled up no trees in club management, and may be better served going to another national team.

As for us, I would have preferred Coleman to still be our manager. I have no faith in Ryan Giggs and can not respect the man on a personal level. Anyone who can do that to their wife is a scumbag, but to their brother

Obviously, that has nothing to do with his management skills. But I don’t rate them either. Hopefully I’m wrong and he will do even better than Coleman. But I can never respect him as a man.

To be honest I don't think he is a great manager anyway. I think he knew he had been caught out with Wales and moved for the money before his stock dropped even further.
