This Takes Me Back To April 1976

Fri Apr 06, 2018 9:29 am

When we had two games against teams that were top and 2nd in the old third division and we won both and went on to win automatic promotion.

For those like me that were at those games, and I'm sure there are many, they left fantastic memories which we will never forget. I can still see Joe Dwyer putting a diagonal ball into the Palace penalty area and Alston raising above everyone to head home the winning goal in a 1-0 away win. I also remember when the game ended the thousands of City fans staying inside the ground and as one singing "Allison Allison Shut Your Mouth", he was the Palace manager and was never slow voicing his all to often wrong opinion . That was a great example of the unity within our club that season and is very similar to that which Neil Warnock and our team have created this season.

The following Wednesday we had a home game against the team that were top of the table, Hereford United, and in front of 35,549 fans we won the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Doug Livermore and Alan Campbell. There was a fantastic atmosphere inside the ground that evening and, in my opinion, one of the finest examples of what Ninian Park and Cardiff City fans could create.

I am so looking forward to the game this evening and I hope that as fans we do our best to recreate within the CCS the fantastic atmosphere I enjoyed back on the 14th April 1976.

Now that will make for one hell of an evening.

That Hereford game was such an anomaly from what I remember we hadn't had a crowd anywhere near 20k never mind 30k that season

The crowd really did come from nowhere although didn't Malcom Allison have something to do with it by claiming we couldn't attract big crowds?

It is so long ago I can't quite remember the full story.

Spot on Tony as Allison made a comment about the Palace crowd being 25k for their game against us and we couldn't get a crowd that big in our wildest dreams. I remember listening to his interview on the supporters club bus on the way home, it went down really well. ;)

I remember kick off for the Hereford game being delayed because no one expected the size of the crowd we had that night. A week earlier we played Preston at home and the crowd was 12k.

Never forget being stood in the enclosure next to some waiters from the Chinese restaurant in riverside they'd never been to the city in their lives but they were loving it.

Yes great memories, as for the so called 35,000 crowd it was far bigger than that, you could'nt move in the ground, also after Allison's comment about the crowd i'm sure the club sent him a case of champagne.

I ended up in the enclosure, (below the grandstand), for the Hereford game. The queues were just too long for the bob bank. Even then, missed the first ten minutes, and didn't get a programme. Bought one years later in the supporters' club shop. 75/76 remains my favourite ever season. Don't think we've had a 30,000 plus league gate since then. Here's hoping tonight.

We haven't (30.000 + league crowd) yet?

At Ninian Park,The safety of sports ground act helped make sure of this. At one stage during the 77/78 season NP's capacity was reduced to little more than 10.000, at the time.

You lot showing your age! :old: :laughing6:

I think the best atmosphere I experienced at Ninian Park was the game against Spurs in the cup when the flare went off!

I seem to remember a few other songs aimed at Allison, including one about a woman he was supposed to be having an affair with at the time. Her name if I remember correctly was Mary Brown, and they changed the words to the tune of Knees up Mother Brown to Who's up Mary Brown. Don't think he was amused.
