Tristan Nydam, Michael Crowe, Ben Morris and Aaron Drinan will all be involved when Town’s U23s take on Cardiff City at Playford Road this afternoon (KO 1pm).

The young Blues are currently second in the Professional Development League Two South table, 12 points behind leaders Crystal Palace but with a game in hand.

With the first-team squad and staff having been given two days off following the Easter fixtures, not too much should be read into manager Mick McCarthy not attending if he isn’t at the game.

Cotter and Drinan on target in comeback win

Two goals in a minute saw Town’s U23s secure all three points against Cardiff City this afternoon.

Barry Cotter and Aaron Drinan were on target as Gerard Nash’s side came from behind to defeat the Bluebirds 2-1 in windy conditions at Playford Road.

Blues couldn’t have got off to a worse start, though, as Cardiff’s Mark Harris broke through and rounded ‘keeper Michael Crowe before teeing up Ibrahim Meite to tap in within a minute.

Chances were few and far between for the remainder of the first-half but the hosts did have one opportunity just before the break. Drinan collected a loose ball and neatly cut inside before dragging his low effort wide of the target.

After the restart Town pushed for an equaliser and came close through substitute Kai Brown but his first-time strike was saved well by Cardiff shot-stopper Connor King.

Crowe was on hand for Town at the other end with a superb low save to deny Harris’ fierce volley from 12 yards.

Nash’s men regrouped and continued to create the better chances with both Drinan and Ben Morris failing to capitalise when one-on-one with Cardiff’s King.

But the breakthrough came in the 79th minute as Cotter’s drive found its way in courtesy of a deflection from Cardiff defender Ciaron Brown.

And just 60 seconds later the comeback was complete. Morris dispossessed Lloyd Humphries and set up strike partner Drinan to fire in from close range.

The win means Town tighten the grip on second in the table with a three point advantage over Charlton.
